“Cemetery” of the Pacific Ocean - The Devil's Sea

The most famous cursed place is undoubtedly the Bermuda Triangle in the Atlantic Ocean, in which many ships and planes have been reported missing. The "younger brother" of the Bermuda Triangle is the Devil's Sea in the Pacific Ocean, which is also widely known for the strange phenomena and disappearances observed in it.

The Devil's Sea is sometimes called the "cemetery" of the Pacific Ocean, because its dark storms and dead swells have swallowed up not a dozen ships over the past decade.

The Devil's Sea is located between the shores of Japan, the island of Guam, which belongs to America, and the northern part of the Philippine Islands. Not a single sailor or scientist can name the exact coordinates. Some say the Devil's Sea is 70 miles off the east coast. Others claim it is 750 miles off the coast between Iwo Jima and Bonin. Still others claim that this is an area near the Medzin reef. The Japanese themselves believe that this anomalous zone is located near Miyake Island, which is located 65 miles south of Tokyo.

Scientists agree that the shape of this sea is a triangle, its peaks are located on the islands of Honshu, Luzon and Guam. In 1955, the Sea of the Devil was officially recognized as a lost place, posing a danger to sailors. He has such a bad reputation that sometimes even the legendary Bermuda Triangle is more deadly. The Devil's Sea is also called the Devil's Triangle, the Pacific Triangle, the Dragon's Triangle, the Dragon's Triangle, the Formosan Triangle. The last name is not very clear, because in ancient times Taiwan was called Formosa, but for some reason the name stuck.

The region of this sea is notorious for the fact that planes and ships, along with their crews, mysteriously disappeared many times. Besides, there’s some kind of devilry going on in this damn place all the time. Sailors say that dolphins, whales, and other marine life are not found in the area of the Sea of the Devil, albatrosses and other birds will not dare to fly over it.

No one can give an answer to the question, what is the reason for all these mysterious phenomena observed in the Sea of the Devil. Researchers have several dozen different versions, including both realistic and fantastic. Admirers of the fantastic are inclined to assume that unidentified flying objects are to blame for these anomalies, as well as some ghost ships that seek to send to the bottom all ships passing through the territory they protect. There are also mystical versions about the existence of a mysterious hole in the sky through which it is possible to enter a parallel world. As if it is this hole that leads to oddities with time and space.

For realistic reasons, first of all, dangerous meteorological conditions are. In the area of the devil's triangle, strong winds often blow, there are incredibly powerful storms, and tornadoes and hurricanes often occur. In addition, air and water flows converge in these places, which have a simultaneous effect. This is what makes the Devil's Sea area so life-threatening. There are also wandering waves, the height of which can reach 30 meters. This is enough to cover even a large ship and carry it to the bottom of the ocean.

Also, among the reasons, the infrasonic effect is mentioned, which affects the psyche of sailors, leading them to panic and forcing them to jump from the ship into the water.

Another of the possible causes of the anomaly is called swirling of magnetic fields, which is expressed in mysterious glow, whirlpools, fountains erupting from the ground, breakdown of navigation and on-board instruments, and improper operation of clock mechanisms.

This eerie place has one characteristic feature: the waters of the Devil's Sea often and suddenly change color. In the morning, the color of the water can be reddish, and by lunchtime it becomes dark brown. Sometimes the sea turns light gray or bright green.

Often on the sea, you can observe a sudden boil of water, covering large areas. White foam covers the surface of the sea, along with strange sounds, similar to the loud boiling of a kettle. It is gases bursting out from the depths of the sea. If the ship is in the very center of such an outburst, then it can instantly go to the bottom. Since the density of the gas is significantly less than the density of water, even a very heavy vessel can suddenly lose its buoyancy and sink into a depth of several tens of meters. A similar phenomenon occurs instantly, the ship does not even have time to send a distress signal, and the ship simply disappears.

To date, many hypotheses have been put forward about the causes of anomalous phenomena in the devil's triangle. The events that constantly took place in this mysterious area, and became the basis for a close study of the Devil's Sea. Let's consider a few facts.

The Devil's Sea has become a cause for concern after several mysterious and unexplained disappearances have occurred in it. Small fishing boats were among the first victims of the anomalous zone, because the Japanese authorities at first did not pay special attention to these cases, because the boats can send even a small storm to the bottom. But from 1950 to 1955, nine more ships disappeared in the same area. This time they were large modern cargo ships, which are equipped with the latest equipment, a reliable radio station and powerful engines. In addition, the weather was good at the time of the disappearance of some ships. This could not be a simple coincidence, therefore, they paid close attention to strange cases.

• 1952, end of September - The research vessel Cayo Maru sailed in the area with 31 people on board. But it never made it to its destination. In search of him, both the Japanese maritime coast guard and the US Air Force planes were raised, the wreckage of the ship was eventually found near Mikura Island. Experts found that the disaster itself happened about 150 miles south of the island, where the ship was discovered. In the same year, on September 24, the Japanese authorities made an official statement according to which the cause of the ship's death was an underwater volcanic eruption. There is also a second version: the ship was covered by a huge wave and sank to the bottom.

• 1952, September 30 - the ship "Tosui-Maru" disappeared without a trace near the Medzin reef. It is not known how many people were on board, no one was found, and the wreckage of the ship itself was not found. And again, the official version of the death of the ship is a volcanic eruption.

This was followed by several more mysterious disappearances. And every time the ships disappeared along with the crew and passengers. The disappearances continued until 1955. In the end, the Japanese authorities declared the disappearance zone of ships anomalous and did not advise ships to pass near it. But since that time, mysterious disasters and disappearances have not stopped.

1955, January - The Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun published an article on the disappearances of ships. It contained the following information: “The place … is called the 'Sea of the Devil'. Over the course of 5 years, 9 ships disappeared there. The reasons are unknown ….

One of the residents of Florida put up for an Internet auction the corpse of a strange half-meter sea monster, which he called a mermaid. His head and hands were like those of a human, and his tail was like a fish's. The mysterious creature sold for $ 1,550. The further fate of this monster is unknown.

• 1976, December - in the north of the Philippine Islands, there was a disaster with the cargo ship "Berge Istra" from Norway. This tanker was one of the newest in the world, it went to Japan with a cargo of Brazilian ore. After 18 days of search activities, two crew members were found and rescued. During the search, various assumptions were considered about the reasons for the disappearance of the dry cargo ship: an attack by pirates, detonation of a mine left over from the Second World War, the deliberate sinking of the ship. The rescued sailors reported that a powerful explosion occurred in the engine room for no reason whatsoever, as a result of which the tanker sank so fast that they did not have time to transmit a distress signal.

Over the next few years, several dozen fishing boats mysteriously disappeared in the Sea of the Devil, most of which never sent a distress signal. Winter 1980-1981 turned out to be the most tragic for this region, six ships disappeared in the area of this sea in one week.

Not only ships disappear in this anomalous zone. Tragedies also occur with planes that ventured to cross the airspace over the cursed triangle. Researcher V. Voitov writes the following in his book: "The legend of the" Devil's Sea "asserts that many planes that took off from Guam, both during the Second World War and in our time, disappeared without a trace in the air above the" Devil's Sea " … In fact, there have been reports of crashes of military aircraft based in Guam, as well as several aircraft crashes of civilian aircraft bound for North America and Australia over the Pacific Ocean. There is no reliable information about the disappearances of civilian aircraft in the airspace over the Sea of the Devil."

• 1998, August - three Japanese jet fighters were heading to the Misawa military base on the island of Honshu. At about seven o'clock in the evening, two fighters disappeared from the radar. Then the pilot of the third fighter sent an incomprehensible message to the base that he saw a mysterious large red ball lightning in the sky above the ocean. She suddenly appeared in front of the fighter, from which he almost crashed into her.

Only a sharp maneuver saved from a collision with ball lightning. After a long search in the area, only a one and a half meters high fragment was found from the horizontal stabilizer of one of the two missing fighters. The aircraft pilots were never found.

• About two months later, again near the Misawa base at eight o'clock in the evening, another Japanese plane disappeared. No alarming messages were received from the pilot, but the radio transmission from the fighter was unexpectedly interrupted, after which the plane itself disappeared from radar. As a result of the search, the patrol ships found only a fragment of a fighter wing. Both disasters with fighters were thoroughly investigated by the Japanese military, but no convincing reasons for their deaths were found.

After analyzing the circumstances of the crashes of aircraft and ships in the area of the devil's sea, the experts came to the conclusion that the reasons for their death are quite real, and not mysterious and mystical. Experts suggested that the main reason for the death of most of the ships is storms that occur in the area quite often. Also, the reason may be in underwater volcanic eruptions, and there are actually a lot of volcanoes in the area of the Devil's Sea. Since there are no real facts indicating the cause of the death of the planes, the leadership of the Japanese Air Force believes that the fighters could have collided with UFOs in the sky.

Typhoons and dangerous tropical cyclones that appear in the western Pacific Ocean, the Philippine and Mariana Islands, and the South China Sea are the official reasons for the disasters of several ships. Many typhoons and cyclones pass through the Devil's Sea.

The abnormal Sea of the Devil is located in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, in which more typhoons occur each year. There are periods when about 40 typhoons occur in this zone per year. Typhoon activity peaks in July-October.

Submarine volcanoes are another major hazard in the Devil's Triangle. Volcanic eruptions occur quite rarely, and nevertheless they are the cause of the catastrophes of many ships. The water area of the Sea of the Devil occupies a large area, in the east of which there is a whole string of islands of volcanic origin. These are the Mariana Islands and the Nampo Islands.

So, off the coast of the Nampo Islands there are many active underwater volcanoes. They themselves are impregnable rocks, on which the white foam of the waves breaks. Ships have been dying on these underwater rocks for centuries. Most of them sank during storms, crashing on coastal reefs. It is not uncommon for ships to crash during calm and calm weather.

In the west, the Sea of the Devil is bordered by the Ryukyu Islands, which are also rocks, next to most of them there are coral reefs. Corals are covered in algae, so they are not always immediately visible. Sailors, aware of these features, exercise the utmost caution when passing these islands. Indeed, even in good sunny weather, it is possible to miss the underwater danger. On the territory of the Honshu Islands there is a high seismic and volcanic activity. Also in this area, earthquakes are quite often observed, leading to a strong change in the topography of the seabed.

South of the Sea of the Devil is the Philippine Islands, and many of them also have a large number of coral reefs near them, which pose a serious danger to sailors. Considering all this, many researchers agree that the reason for the strange wrecks of some ships may be navigation errors, non-compliance with safety rules near volcanic and seismically dangerous areas.

Some researchers are looking for the cause of shipwrecks in the fact that in the area of the Devil's Sea there are sudden changes in temperature, eruptions of underwater volcanoes, storms and ocean currents. In their opinion, this is what causes deviations in the air and water space, which leads to the death of ships.

However, maritime organizations, insurance companies, the Japanese military, and even the US Air Force were extremely concerned about such disappearances. According to some researchers, anomalous phenomena cannot be explained only by the specifics of the geographical location of this zone. Indeed, in addition to the disappearance of ships in the area of the Sea of the Devil, many other oddities are observed, for example, the magnetic arrows in this area begin to rotate themselves chaotically, radio signals disappear, and signals from the ships' radars disappear. Also in this area, there are magnetic and gravitational deviations.

Nowadays, scientists cannot say with certainty what are the true reasons for the strange disappearances of ships and aircraft in the Sea of the Devil. Therefore, along with absolutely real assumptions, amateur researchers put forward the most fantastic hypotheses about time curvatures, the intervention of extraterrestrial civilizations, anti-gravity fields and other mystical reasons …
