Probably, representatives of any profession have their own legends. Some are rooted in hoary antiquity, others appeared relatively recently, turning into "urban folklore". Railway workers are often sane people and not prone to excessive fantasy. But sometimes they also remember a beautiful story about a certain ghost train. Is it a legend?

Moving between worlds

In the journal Science and Religion for 1976 V. Komarov (lecturer at the Moscow Planetarium) wrote that sometimes a strange picture appears over the water surface of Lake Baikal. “A passenger train appears about a kilometer from the coast. It moves straight through the air a few meters above the water. It moves completely silently - no clanking of buffers, no clatter of wheels. The illuminated windows of the carriages are clearly visible, with silhouettes of people flashing through them. Car after carriage silently floats through the air, the ghost train disappears into the mysterious blackness of the night”[5]. The author explains it by the so-called "upper mirage" or "air ghost" of the train, which actually passed on the opposite side of the lake.

Perhaps it is these mirages that formed the basis of folklore about mysterious trains, allegedly lost in time and space. Alas, most often they are published in sources with a very dubious reputation and are not considered by us seriously. But since sometimes Belarus is also mentioned there, willy-nilly Ufokom specialists are involved in the investigation of such reports. For example, about seven years ago, information appeared that a certain I. P. Patsey gathered a group of enthusiasts to solve this phenomenon, which included a railway specialist and even a philosopher. Among other objects, where they traveled, there was “a large railway junction in Baranovichi”. This place, in all likelihood, was chosen because in the Baranovichi region "the headquarters of the Supreme Commander was located in the cars of the imperial staff." While checking this story,we managed to find out from the railway workers that in the Baranovichi region there are only a few self-operating semaphores. However, it is hardly possible to associate this with the "passage of an invisible train" - here we are dealing with a certain malfunction, although not frequent.

At the end of 2016, another story related to the railway theme came to our attention. Although it was also published on the resource pikabu.ru, which is very far from being academic, it received quite a wide response, which ended in proceedings in the Belarusian Railways itself. As a result, she was removed from the resource. Below we present its text here without cuts and corrections [6].

Promotional video:

For the last couple of years I have been working as an assistant driver. Of course, we get together with colleagues in companies and under a glass of tea we discuss painful things - as they say, with women about work, at work about women. I heard a couple of times that on the Falichi - Daraganovo stretch (Republic of Belarus, Mogilev region) one could “fall into the past”, but usually such a conversation was perceived at the level of “No more pouring for Jupiter”.

Today the driver and I were driven to do household work near Slutsk, we rolled off our watches and are driving in reserve (that is, one diesel locomotive, without wagons) home. We began to overtake in Falich, overtook and scratch home. I fill out the route, and then the driver asks sincerely: - Ept, where are we going now?

I raise my eyes and understand that we are sawing along a completely unfamiliar section of the road - the right-of-way is gone, the branches are literally whipping over the mirrors, there are no kilometer posts or pickets. We try to request the stations - the call does not go through, the request is sent, but there is no response back.

The driver of the iron mare threw off the speed, we are sneaking barely 40 km / h. As it seemed, we drove for a long time, but now we leave the curve and oops - everything is fine, everything is as usual. Ahead is the rise, behind it is the left curve, and it will be visible before the entrance traffic light of the Daraganovo station, so the call from the station attendant to the radio came …

We arrived in Osipovichi, while the locomotive was supplied and handed over for the depot, the driver counted on the speed meter tape how many kilometers we traveled from Falich to Daraganovo, and asked me to count it. No matter how they counted, it still turns out 5 kilometers more than in fact there is …

So believe it - don't believe it, but it happens …

PS Before and after the flight, a mandatory medical examination with an breathalyser is carried out, and group hallucinations, in my opinion, are unrealistic.

So, initially, an eyewitness posted answers to clarifying questions directly on the forum, where he published his story. In particular, he cited information that, according to statistics, 35 extra kilograms of fuel were consumed for that flight1, and that there are no sections on the road that would have tree branches hanging (looking ahead, we will say that this is really so). He also dismissed the version of the "joke" - for such an eccentricity, it would be necessary to dig up about 50 picket poles, and also transplant trees closer to the railway line at about a five-kilometer stretch. According to him, in the same places2 "twisted a couple of three times in mushrooms."

We contacted an eyewitness and clarified some details. The case itself, in his words, occurred on the night of 13.10 to 14.10, about 22.35 plus / minus 2-3 minutes. When passing the station, the assistant driver, according to the order, rode standing, observing the readings of traffic lights and the correctness of the path; I lit a cigarette 30–40 meters from the exit traffic light, after which I began to fill the route, but I managed to get only the hat. The average speed there was about 40 km / h, plus 1–1.5 minutes for "smoke" and 0.5 minutes for the beginning of filling the route. That is, they drove about 1.3-1.5 km from the exit traffic light.

The driver asserted that “at the moment of the transition” it seemed to become dark for a moment, but not so when the spotlight went out, but like when driving on the road at night with an oncoming car, it blinked for a moment, and then “you seem to see, but there is no clarity”. The transition from the usual attitude to the anomalous one took place almost imperceptibly, when leaving for a normal area it only seemed that it had become a little brighter.

However, some time after our conversation, a strange thing happened - the author of the message completely deleted it from the site, and did not contact us anymore …

Abnormal folklore

The section of the road indicated in the message is located between the Osipovichi district of the Mogilev (ag. Daraganovo) region and the Starodorozhsky district of the Minsk (railway station Falichi) region. Since the first message appeared, Ufokom has organized two expeditions to the site. The first was held on November 5-7, 2016 (No. 180; E. Orlova, O. Orlov), the second - June 30 - July 1, 2017 (No. 191; O. Orlova, O. Orlov, I. Butov, E. Shaposhnikov) [8]. Our tasks included a survey of local residents in villages directly adjacent to the railway section where an incident could occur (collection of "anomalous folklore"), passage, visual and instrumental examination of the territory adjacent to the railway tracks, calculation of the average time spent by trains to cross the section Falichi - Daraganovo and, ultimately, reconstruction of the possible movement of the locomotive (if it took place on that day).

The year of commissioning of this section between Starye Dorogi and Osipovichi is 1896. According to the stories of local residents, the railway was built here by "Lady Doroganova". In Falichi itself, at first there was a siding for trains, where later a settlement arose. Allegedly, the old road ran to the left of the current one and before the Great Patriotic War was two-track, then, according to one version, “the Germans destroyed it,” and if the other, “dismantled their own so that the Germans did not get it. The fact remains that now there is only one way. Another interesting fact: in the questionnaires of the People's Commissariat for Education for the 1924s, it is mentioned that during the construction of a highway near the village of Evseevichi (now the Glussky district of the Mogilev region), road workers met in the Pogulianka tract and a mound was built. Each one brought a shovel of earth [7].

It is also worth noting that several years ago, when studying the patterns of the location of "prodigal places" in the "England-Cosmopoisk" group (headed by Vlad Gushcha), it was noticed that almost all such places lie on the border of the gradient of the gravitational-magnetic anomaly. Just in the Falichi area, according to the EMAG2 V2 project, such an anomaly is present. And all the Falichi - Daraganovo section mentioned in the story goes right along the contour of such an anomalous "hillock" (the railway line of the above section is drawn in black). The highest probability of an anomaly (gradient maximum) is inside the red circle, that is, approximately in the place where it could have occurred. In addition, a powerful power transmission line runs near the center of the red circle.

We will return to the technical details later, but now we will focus on the results of our survey of the territory and the collection of anomalous folklore. Anomalous folklore is a collection of all the stories about the inexplicable, told by the inhabitants of a certain territory. It is evenly "smeared" throughout the country and only in some places, for various reasons, does it accumulate. As a result, he forms his own map of each area.

Almost all of the people we interviewed (including the railroad workers) confidently stated that they never wandered either in this area or in the surrounding forests, let alone "moved". We have recorded only one story of a different kind from the vicinity of the village of Falichi.

I myself was lost three years ago [Why? What a prodigal place was?] That is no place, shob INTO, walked on. She walked like she was walking through a swamp, walking around mushrooms … […] No, I would not go back, go back along this road, as I usually do. No, I think I will go there. And along a parallel road, already along this one, I walked … [I thought] it will be, I'll collect it there. I went there. How did I get lost, got off that road? The sun was good […] I look at such a swamp ahead. I think: "Ay, I will cross this swamp …". If there was no way to return - but the brains are not the same [Are you lost in that swamp? Or …] Went through this swamp. I slipped like this, my legs went forward. And now she embraced everything, and like that hands. And as if I was immobilized in something. I can’t move, neither arm nor leg. I lie like this, and I feel that my back is already getting cold, my back is near the water. I lay, lay,you already know me so fear is catching up. And there was a tree in front of it. Well - as if for me, well, somehow, well, I can't move, no. And how long I was lying, I do not know. Then I started to move a little. I am to this tree somehow. Everything was shaking with me, like this, it can be seen from overvoltage. I still clung to it, to the tree … well, so thin, small. And here some … some log lay. I sat down on this log, and my body beat and beat me, then I walked away. Then I moved on, to this […] … it was already not far away. I switched to this, into the forest. And in the direction, in the sun, came out on the road … this. I don’t know, I don’t know what happened to me. I am to this tree somehow. Symptoms of this strange condition are reminiscent of poisoning with marsh rosemary (Ledum Palustre), a poisonous plant, when inhaled, the aroma of which can easily become disoriented and get serious poisoning (even fatal). It was also possible to establish that people sometimes disappear in the surrounding swamps located on the right and left sides of the railway tracks. Corpses are found in the quagmire, if at all. The last missing person has not yet been found despite all the efforts of volunteers and relatives.

One of the local residents we interviewed also drew attention to the place where a free-standing well is located in the railroad right-of-way. According to him, in the area of the well, mushroom pickers and hunters have repeatedly noticed a strange spread of sound from a passing train. Our informant personally witnessed the situation when, at a distance of no more than a hundred meters, a diesel engine was observed completely soundlessly following in the direction of Daraganovo - Falichi. This amazed him (the witness) so much that he deliberately stepped onto the railway track and looked at the tail of the silently departing train. The same information was confirmed by the forester belonging to this site. Unusual acoustic effects (clearly distinguishable "shaking", low sharp pulses with a frequency of 20-30 Hz,very reminiscent of the "hum" of a working diesel locomotive engine) were recorded by the Pribaltika-Kosmopoisk group in the Tukums and Riga anomalous zones. At the same time, the nearest railway line was about 8 km of wooded, hilly terrain. The answer to the riddle was found quite suddenly: after talking with the lineman, we found out that such "disappearances" of sound are not at all uncommon. "Steals" the sounds … the same swamp. In addition, the direction of the wind also plays a role. As a result, a person can find out about the approach of a train only by the vibration of the rails, while not hearing the sound of an approaching train (for someone, but the lineman, this information is vital). The same can happen in severe frost - you can hear a branch crunching in the forest, but you can't hear a train approaching you from behind …At the same time, the nearest railway line was about 8 km of wooded, hilly terrain. From one of the informants in the village of Falichi, back in the November expedition, we recorded a message about a "ghost in a top hat" that was pursuing him:

I went to fifth … sixth grade, I went. Well, my grandmother stayed in Falici, I finished school there. Well, I went here for the weekend. Well, here I go, I’m going, I’ll look back - he is following me on a bicycle. I will get up - he is standing. I'm so … you know … I went to the sixth grade. I look around and run and run and run. Rides a bike after me. Such a hat with a top hat. I haven’t even seen such people, I haven’t seen anything in the movies, so that […] that we have something like this, I don’t know. Well, in general, I on my way, turned closer to the house […] came running, and my mother: “What is wrong with you, that you are breathless?”. I say: "Yes, something, someone was following me on a bicycle." Nobody saw anyone, everyone followed her out … nothing [Not even a trace of a bicycle?] There was nothing, not a trace of a bicycle … nothing. And there was another case … [Wait a second, what did he look like? Can you describe?] You see,now - as I watch a movie, for everything so … he has a black suit, some kind of top hat, a hat like that. Well, nothing is so special … that's how these […] [And where was it, where is it?] This is the turn, from this road, from the central one. When you go from Falici […] And all the way he followed me […] and when I turned here, and then I was closer to home, then I was already flying without looking back.

After the war, another story happened with the same informant in the vicinity of Falichi village:

And we also had this. My dad is in Minsk, he worked at a tractor plant […] We still lived in Falichi […] How old was I then? Did you go to school or not? Well, dad came already, came home for the weekend. And as usual, after the war, you know, there was no cereal, nothing. And there I picked up cereals, all kinds of products. And he carried. And a man from our village, from these Falichi, worked here on the railway. Well, they met, he says: "Oh, I'm not a walker with you, you will be here with these bags." I, he says, will come in and tell Mana to meet you. Well, he came to us and said: “Beckoning, go meet […] Go meet, there Victor is walking. And so […] my mother took me and my younger sister, she is two years younger. She was also, apparently, afraid, it was already dark, in the evening it was … I don't know what time it was. The train ran at eleven, I don't know, it was in the evening. Well, from we go,we go - and you can see from fear, too, so big from fear. Come on, I go from there, and I see from the Christmas tree. And dad seems to be sitting under this Christmas tree, with bags. I say to my mother: "Let's go quietly, he will notice us or not." Well, I also gave my mother a fear there ', because neither my sister nor my mother can see anything, and I don't know which ones […]. I can see that this one, papa, is sitting under it. Mom says: "Where?" That one over there under the tree […] my mother waved me to go. We, however, soon met dad, and so we passed and met dad. And we went on.sits this, dad, under this. Mom says: "Where?" That one over there under the tree […] my mother waved me to go. We, however, soon met dad, and so we passed and met dad. And we went on.sits this, dad, under this. Mom says: "Where?" That one over there under the tree […] my mother waved me to go. We, however, soon met dad, and so we passed and met dad. And we went on.

In addition, a little to the side of the railway line, near the village of Minkovichi, Starodorozhsky district, they supposedly see some shadows in which someone "recognized" a ghost. Here is what a local resident Alexander Lapanik told us:

The first case - one man and a woman went there. They sit in the car. And the snow fell literally three centimeters. UAZ car. They decomposed there: maybe drink champagne or something. Hear some steps around the car. How all the same the snow crunches there. In short, they were scared. They started to leave from that place. According to him, these are two bridges, a straight road. For about an hour, the car skidded, could not leave. Out of the blue. Out of the blue. And the second person went. There they made a fire with a woman too. In short, he saw some kind of shadow behind her. Then she saw a shadow behind him. They got scared and, in short, left there.

Interestingly, the former excavator operator Andrei S. we interviewed said that several years ago, in the very place where shadows appeared, he dug a whole human skeleton out of the ground. During the analysis, it turned out that the remains belonged to an "unidentified person", and the one who discovered the find was also deprived of the prize - after all, according to the law, the remains must be reburied. So they let him in on this bonus.

About the almost extinct village of Buda, located a little to the side of the surveyed section of the track, we wrote down two interesting expressions: "Budze has a devil for bludze" and "Oh, sleep at night, let the trains go through Buda!" Or another option: "Oh, the trains will go through Budu!" Its etymology is not entirely clear, maybe it means that the trains going through Buda were really late? But maybe she is talking about the sluggishness of the local railway workers or local residents that once took place?

A few words should be said about the sacred geography of this territory. Not far from the place where our "hitmen" noticed changes in the surrounding landscape (between the villages of Buda and Kovgary), there is Perynova (Perunova) mountain - an old gathering place for people on Kupalya. And on the territory of the Osipovichi district, where the section of the piece of iron leading to Daraganovo is located, in turn, there are five Bald Mountains [4]. There are also cult stones, for example, in the Starodorozhsky district, three are the most famous (village Sinegovo, village Starye Dorogi and village Starye Falichi), and several in Osipovichi - (village Vyazye, village Krynka, village Myazovichi). The closest to the place of our expedition was a stone near the village of Falichi. When polling the population of the village of Starye and Novye Falichi, it turned out that it was discovered relatively recently - according to various sources, in the 80s – 90s of the XX century, and before that no one suspected of its existence. So we can talk about the new appearance of this cult. Only one woman from the village of Falichi, referring to a conversation with some "old grandmother", said that she claimed that they had been treated with a stone during the Great Patriotic War. Human remains were dug up next to the stone.

Diesel locomotive or diesel locomotive?

We remember that the author deleted his original message and refused to cooperate further. Why? It turns out that at the place of work there was a trial about a "faulty speedometer", where reasonable arguments of the BelZhD leadership were voiced against the sudden movement of their employees to "another dimension." Some are said to have been deprived of their bonuses and even threatened with dismissal. Perhaps this is what made the driver answer any question about that very day that nothing like this happened, and his partner, apparently, got a smoke or thought of everything to make the story more interesting. Or maybe, faced with the facts, our heroes decided not to invent any more and confess everything? Be that as it may, now both "hit" among their friends unanimously say that history has never happened.

So, we approached the most interesting place. Was there even that ill-fated flight that day? Our persistent appeals to the BelZhD information bureau eventually yielded results, we were shown the "holy of holies": records of all flights, impartially stored by the automation. Let's not torment the reader: on October 13, around 10:00, there were no diesel locomotive runs. The closest to the indicated date were the following diesel locomotive flights:

1) No. 4404 dated October 13, 2016, but from Falichi station he departed at 7.13 am, and at 7.25 he arrived in Daraganovo. As we found out, the average time to pass this section is 15 minutes, so 12 minutes is clearly not a delay and we can safely dismiss this flight as a kind of "anomalous".

2) No. 4804 dated October 14, 2016. Departure from Falichi station at 11.11, and arrival in Daraganovo at 11.24. Travel time is 13 minutes. Also the normal passage time.

Therefore, it can be said absolutely unambiguously that during the time declared by eyewitnesses, not a single diesel locomotive voyage between the two stations was performed. But this could be understood even so, knowing the nuances of the post-trip delivery of the composition. It usually takes an hour and a half, and given that the message was written at zero the next day (October 14), an eyewitness to this event would literally have to fly home (at the station itself, the connection is extremely bad). But it was still necessary to get to Osipovichi.

However, on October 13 at 16.11, not a diesel locomotive passed between the stations, but a diesel locomotive # 8602. And it arrived at 16.30, that is, it spent 19 minutes on the way. Moreover, the author mentions about "household work near Slutsk", which means that he was driving to the haul and back: such maneuvers can only be performed by motor vehicles. Business trains can also be without wagons, that is, one locomotive was traveling.

But here, as they say, not everything is so simple. The diesel locomotives do not have a clear timetable at all, and a diesel engine could go ahead - and the guys were in no hurry to follow it, because then they would have to stand at the stations (therefore, the locomotive gives odds to the diesel engine in order to safely drive everywhere). From this, "delays" arise. If the author of the message was driving under overtaking, he would have been waiting for the diesel engine No. 6528 which followed from Daraganovo. However, if it was not October 13, then we can only guess on the coffee grounds - for whom and in front of whom he followed and whether there was this flight at all, and not a played out fantasy of a person, paving the way from point A to point B …

Is it possible to somehow confirm the words of the assistant driver? Of the devices that were guaranteed to function in this state, there was only a speed meter. Alas, it was not possible to get acquainted with his testimony. The speed gauge tape was handed over, tested and sent to the archives of the department of the Belarusian Railway for 5 years. However, if the composition actually disappeared somewhere, the so-called false freedom would arise. On the control panel of the attendant it would look like this: a train was traveling, driving, and then suddenly, once, and disappeared. More precisely, the indication of its presence on the stretch disappeared. Signaling, centralization and blocking devices (SZB) no longer "see" it. If this happened on the switch rail circuit, then the switch under the train may also move. The consequences can be irreversible. Presumably, having noticed this on the control panel, the attendant should have raised the alarm. But no alarm was raised. In addition, the train arrived with an unofficial delay of about 4 minutes, but this also did not cause any complaints at the station. Is this possible?

Firstly, it is a completely normal practice for BelZhD employees to ignore being 5 minutes late and to include in the corresponding protocols that everything is fine and the trains are "on schedule" That is, there must be a completely “cosmic” delay for it to become precisely a delay. If the dispatcher would even fix the time at 16.36, he could write 16.30, so as not to emphasize too much delay. And then the delay would really be about 10 minutes. Over the past 4 months, a train delay was recorded on that section only once due to the fact that a tree fell on the way.

Secondly, as it was already mentioned, the motor vehicles do not have a clear timetable and, in addition, the motor vehicles, as light mobile units, have poor coupling with the rail chain and for some time they can “disappear” from the attendant's control panel. The latter simply would not pay any attention to this ordinary phenomenon.

Thirdly, if it were a diesel locomotive running around 4 o'clock, the assistant driver would have had time to get to Osipovichi and calmly hand over the train before printing and posting his story on the Internet at 0 o'clock.

conclusions

It turned out that neither the time stated by the eyewitness, nor the type of rolling stock, did not correspond to the train schedule on the Falichi - Daraganovo section of October 13, 2016. The only train that is more or less suitable (at least for a part of the story) is motor car # 8602, but it is difficult to call its "lateness" something out of the ordinary - it arrived 4 minutes later than the average time of passage along this section of the road.

The monotonous day-to-day transfers between stations are monotonous work, which, in turn, can affect the psyche, leading to its disorders and short-term hallucinations. Although that day the driver and his assistant worked for only 5 hours, the presence of a high-voltage power transmission line in this place could play a role, since the effects of low-frequency electromagnetic pulses on the brain have repeatedly been noted effects similar to those that occur in altered states of consciousness.

Could there be any other explanation for this whole story? We have noticed that most often such phenomena are of an extremely sporadic nature and, as a rule, do not occur several times in the same place. But, which is characteristic, they quite often happen in the immediate vicinity of bogs [2, 3]. A person who breathes in air saturated with vapors of a bog gas - methane - experiences oxygen starvation, similar to drug intoxication, with all the ensuing consequences. A mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide and other hydrocarbons acts on the central nervous system, which can also cause hallucinatory visions. In this case, no traces of psychoactive drugs will be found during the inspection. The weak side of this assumption is that when the train moves, an air flow is created, which prevents hydrocarbons from concentrating in one place.

During the preparation of this material, another amusing detail emerged. The story has firmly taken root on the Internet, acquiring the most incredible details. So, it was argued that everything happened with the "M62 diesel locomotive", which "loitered for 2 hours who knows where." What are we going to read about this story a few years later: how many days did the train wander between the worlds, or what insignia did the Germans have, who instructed schmeisers at the poor employees of the railway? One thing is clear, as in other similar stories, here we may be dealing with a borderline between real facts, fiction and misinterpretation of what happened, as a result of which we still have no reason to believe that some anomalous incident took place in reality.

Footnotes

1. As follows from the quote, 35 kilograms were spent not only on this site, but on several more "left maneuvers".

2. It is worth noting that in “such” does not mean that it is in these, but rather similar places somewhere in this or neighboring areas.

3. A locomotive with an internal combustion engine of low power (up to 220 kW) for shunting and auxiliary works on main, access and other railway tracks. A diesel locomotive with less than 150 horsepower can also be called a diesel locomotive.
