For me, reports on the development of ufology in Cuba have a special meaning, since I know this country quite well. At one time, I had the opportunity to drive it up and down twice and thoroughly inspect the entire island, so I know that its territory (especially in the eastern, mountainous part) has a landscape that is especially attractive for newcomers - mountains overgrown with forests, and around the sea … The fact that there were practically no reports of UFOs from Cuba before (with the exception of one case, about which below), could be explained by only one thing - the peculiarities of the political regime and, hence, the secrecy of information. In addition, the appearance of a UFO there was probably mistaken for the machinations of US intelligence. Now Cuban ufologists even have their own organization.
On Sunday 12 May 2002, Cuban ufologists gathered in the city of Artemisa, 60 kilometers west of Havana, to celebrate the anniversary of their group. It's called GIFA-Orion - Orion's Anomalous Research Group. The president of the young organization, Miguel Mendes Diaz, congratulated the enthusiasts on the first anniversary of Cuban ufology, after which the participants discussed more than 20 cases of UFO sightings over the island and over the sea around it.
American researcher Mike Bird, who recently visited Cuba, confirms that there has been a wave of ufological activity in recent years. He was able to speak with five Cuban researchers in Havana and see what they were doing. In particular, he was shown a video called "UFOs over Cuba", created by the researcher Octavo Cortazar, and was presented with a 300-page book "Signs", which describes different types of UFOs and provides evidence of their appearance over the island over the years.
In general, local researchers, who live mainly in Havana, have already made several documentaries about UFOs. However, the most sensational case involves the farmer Adolfo Sarate, who saw the UFO landing literally 60 meters away!
An old farmer says the weather was disgusting that day. It was pouring rain and a heavy thunderstorm was raging. And then suddenly “this thing” landed on his field. A small ladder emerged from the UFO, along which a "completely Christian-looking" (human-like) creature, dressed in a camouflage suit, descended to the ground. The UFO, by the way, was also painted "the color of the grass." The enlonaut's face was not visible, it was hidden under something like a gas mask. The rest of the alien was quite human-like. The pilot examined his ship and said something to the other crew member who remained inside. After that, he began to tinker in the field, seemingly inspecting rice shoots or, most likely, picking malanga (something like local potatoes). Then he climbed up the ladder, and the UFO took off, splashing out blue flames.
“The only thing I felt,” says the farmer, “is the pressure of the air emitted by the exhaust. I don't know if this apparatus was made of wood, iron or air, but it was about the size of a tourist bus or a school bus. It had neither wings nor a propeller. It looked like a flattened egg or maybe a turtle that landed on two shock-absorbing legs. It seems to me that the device had something like a sled, because the prints of the "wheels" are well preserved. I did not notice anything similar to a weapon in the alien.
All this was recently reported by the Juventud Rebelde de Cuba newspaper. However, the very first information about Cuban UFOlogy leaked into the world back in 1996, when Dr. Virgilio Sánchez Osejo, a researcher at the UFO Center in Miami, and a number of other Hispanic listeners in the United States heard the broadcast of the Cuban radio station Radio Rebelde from Havana. It was July 4th, but that broadcast had reported several UFO sightings in the previous year. And, in particular, about the landing of a "bell-like" UFO in the vegetable field of Adolfo Sarate, which took place on October 15, 1995 at 9.30 am.
It happened not far from Playa Giron, where the Cubans once repulsed a sortie of American saboteurs, or rather, near the town of Torriente in the province of Matanzas. Adolfo Sarate was then 74 years old. The UFO looked very unusual and seemed to him "like a turtle shell", so the peasant quickly hid behind the bushes and preferred to see what would happen from there. It was then that he saw that one of the pilots got out of the aircraft and pulled the malanga in the field, and then, holding it in his little hands, climbed back up the ladder. Well, when a UFO with "two men" in suits similar to diving flew away and disappeared into the clouds, Adolfo said where to go. More precisely, he reported to the police, but “comrades” from the Main Intelligence Directorate arrived at the scene and investigated everything around, fixing all the physical evidence of the presence of strangers:prints of UFO supports and traces of an alien on the soil, withered, blackened and, as it were, burnt leaves of plants around, etc. According to rumors, all materials were sent to the Cuban Academy of Sciences. It is not known, however, what the academicians said. But it is known that at the same time on the radio the Cubans told about several more cases of UFO sightings.

Three days after the UFO landed near Playa Giron, an unnamed woman reported to the competent authorities that on October 18, she noticed a UFO in Puerto Padre, a small town in the province of Las Lunas. The subject glowed brightly. And by the way, the same woman mentioned that she saw him a few days before.
- He did not make the slightest sound and moved up, down and to the sides, - the eyewitness clarified. - Then he passed low over Puerto Padre and flew towards the city of Holguín.
On the same day, October 18, another (or the same?) UFO was seen in Sancti Spirita, but already at 10 pm. In addition, the officers and soldiers of the Cuban army recorded "an intense glow in the sky for several minutes" at two points on the island - in Mahibacoa and in Calixto Garcia, but both in the province of Holguín. Actually, that Radio Rebelde show was unprecedented. For the first time in 36 years of Fidel Castro's rule, the existence of a UFO has been recognized! However, after that it took another five years for ufology to be finally recognized as well …
