The molecules that make up DNA can emit soft light that can be described as "ghostly". The discovery of the fluorescent properties of molecules of genetic material belongs to biologists from Northwestern University (United States of America), who shared the results of their research in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

DNA luminescence, discovered by American scientists, can be used as a natural visualization mechanism for various genetically determined processes that occur at the intracellular level.

Modern science uses third-party substances for these purposes - for example, protein compounds that produce green light. Fluorescent proteins are used to improve the visibility of cytological studies. However, all the components necessary for fluorescence, as it turned out, are present in DNA from the very beginning; you just need to activate them in a special way.

“You just need to expose the DNA material to light. As a result, the mechanisms responsible for luminescence pass into an excited state and the DNA begins to glow on its own,”say the microbiologists.
