The owners of the unusual dog told reporters that at first they thought it was black, but then they noticed a green tint of the coat. All other puppies from the same litter are fawn. Their mother, a two-year-old Labrador Retriever named Millie, has a brown coat.
The unusual color is due to the increased content of biliverdin in the dog's placenta. This substance is formed by the breakdown of hemoglobin. With jaundice, it can accumulate in a person's skin, giving it a greenish tint.
The puppy was named Fifi in honor of Princess Fiona from the movie "Shrek", who turned into a green giant. The owners plan to sell Fifi when she grows up.
