Social media users are speculating around a photograph of a New Zealand woman. Melissa Doubleday, while walking along the coast, discovered a strange object with marine life on it. Photos of the find sparked a heated discussion on Facebook. Guesses range from an escaped whale to a dreadlocked monster and a beach tree.

According to Doubleday, she found something covered in sea creatures at Meriwai Beach in Auckland. The girl noted that at first she mistook him for an escaped whale, but realized her mistake when she came closer. She photographed the item and posted the photo to the Facebook group. The photo garnered many comments from other users who tried to explain Doubleday's find.

"Dreadlocks of the sea monster" - suggested Nick Vitasovich.

"Beachside Christmas tree," wrote Katie Faber.

"A time capsule with aliens," says Caitlin Kerr.

Aandy Sean agrees with him: "It's a UFO."

Others said it was a sea animal known as the sea duck. This is the most likely option, given the fact that this crustacean is quite often found living in whole families on snags.

It is noteworthy that in Portugal and Spain sea ducks are considered a delicacy.

The New Zealand find in social networks has also been nicknamed "the monster from the depths" and "the Meriwaiian monster."
