Officials from the Catholic Church have confirmed the existence of angels, but assured that in fact they do not look at all the way people used to imagine them.
Father Renzo Lavatori, who specializes in the study of angels, said that the celestial beings that are "back in vogue" thanks to new age religions are in fact more like shards of light.
“You don't see the angels so much as you feel their presence,” he said at a conference in Rome on angels. "They are like sunlight falling on you after passing through a crystal vase."
Speaking at a conference in the hall of a lavishly frescoed Renaissance palace in Rome, he added: "I think this is a new discovery of angels in Christianity."
The senior priest took part in the Angel Art Week debate at the Fondazione Archivio Storico, which was organized by the Italian Art Association and supported by the Vatican.
As one of the organizers of the exhibition stated: “The purpose of the exhibition was to trace the history of angels in human culture, or at least our civilization. Angels helped the development of religious and philosophical thought and became the reason for the birth of sublime forms of poetic and artistic expression."
Renzo Lavatori said that the natural result of the popularization of the image of the angel is that they are back in fashion, and this is especially felt on Christmas Eve.
“There is room for the author's imagination, but you have to understand that in reality angels look different. Angels have no wings and have nothing to do with cherubs,”he said.
