Scientists from the University of Buffalo, USA, made a very important discovery. They determined that red wine can help relieve certain mental problems. Wine's beneficial effects on mental health have been proven in long-term experiments with laboratory animals that were depressed and then cured.

It turns out that red wine helps relieve depression and anxiety. This does not mean the use of a "shock" dose of alcohol, which causes the same feeling of inexplicable joy of being, but a completely different application is meant. Resveratrol, a natural antioxidant contained in grape skins, acts as a healing component in wine.

Laboratory mice and rats were very helpful in identifying the positive effect of resveratrol on the psyche. The rodents were deliberately upset and made to fall into depression, and then … No, they did not pour wine into the drinkers, but added resveratrol extracted from grapes to their food. The substance immediately began to act, or rather, to break down the PDE4 enzyme accumulated in the medulla, causing a suppressed state. Very soon the mental state of the rodents improved and not the slightest trace of the hardships experienced in their bodies remained.

Scientists believe that this is an important discovery, but, alas, they cannot yet find a practical application for it. The thing is that you need a lot of resveratrol to get out of depression, and wine contains a scanty amount. It has already been calculated that for a person weighing 70 kg, the effective dose of this substance will be 700 mg. This is the amount of biologically active component contained in 350 glasses of red wine. A person cannot take such an amount of wine in one sitting, and if he could, it clearly did not benefit him. The alcohol content in the blood in this case will be several times higher than the permissible dose and the patient suffering from anxiety will be drunk to death. Therefore, the Buffalo researchers argue that the future of their discovery lies with pharmacists, who must learn to separate the drug from the poison and create resveratrol pills.

Today, drugs with a completely different mechanism of action are used to treat depressive conditions. They are aimed at altering the functions of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. New grape-based drugs will help block the harmful enzymes themselves, making the treatment of patients at least three times more effective.
