This is not a simple and very controversial issue - the death penalty. I think that there are approximately plus / minus equally opinions on the use of this measure and on the account of its prohibition. But Belarus is the only country in Europe where the death penalty is in force. In the comments to this news on the Internet, you can find many statements, such as "I wish they did it in Russia too."

Even Amnesty International's Belarus employee Aisha Jung says that the abolition of such a punishment as the death penalty depends more on the authorities. Because it is absolutely impossible to rely on a referendum: "As history shows, the majority of the population is in favor of retaining the death penalty." This is the turn, this is the democratic principles - when necessary, you can sacrifice them for the sake of the ideas of humanism … or some other.

In total, over the past 20 years, more than 400 prisoners have been shot in Belarus, including four people in 2016 and two in 2017. Why were two more people shot a few days ago?

Semyon Berezhny and Igor Gershankov were sentenced to death for the murder of six people and fraud with the victims' apartments. As follows from the materials of the court case, from 2009 to 2015, convicts as part of a group of "black realtors" persuaded residents of the Mogilev region to sell or exchange housing, and then killed them. There were 4 people in the group. But this topic is well known to us. In Russia, such cases often surface.

During the trial, the defendants claimed that they had forced confessions out of them, and also complained about the slander on the part of their accomplices. Despite this, in July 2017, Berezhny and Gershankov were sentenced to death, and two other members of the group received 22 and 24 years in prison.

How do you feel about the death penalty?
