According to numerous eyewitnesses, the spirit of one of the first caretakers lives at the New London Ledge Light near New London, in the US state of Connecticut.
The lighthouse was built in 1910. It has three floors overlooking a square breakwater. At the lighthouse, when it was built, a certain Ernie, known today only by name, and his wife lived in seclusion.
According to legend, one day Ernie discovered that his wife had left him. A note left said that she had left with the captain from Block I-Land Ferry. Shocked by this, Ernie climbed onto the roof of the lighthouse and, throwing himself down, crashed to death.

Poltergeist phenomena also happened: chairs moved by themselves, doors opened and closed. Ernie's presence was reported until May 1, 1987, when the lighthouse became automated.
From the point of view of the psychologists of the naval department, which is in charge of the lighthouse, if there was no suicide (and it allegedly did not happen, since there are no documents), the ghost at the lighthouse can only be explained by a strong belief in the legend of Ernie. This, they say, caused the caretakers to hallucinations, which in part should be attributed to some mental disorder due to the long isolation of the lighthouse staff.
In the last years of the lighthouse's existence, Coast Guard personnel were sent there for eighteen months. The daily watch lasted twelve hours. Six days' leave was granted after one or two weeks of work.
