In Azov, archaeologists investigate an ancient street paved with animal bones. Azov archaeologists continue to explore an excavation site on Petrovsky Boulevard, where the center of the medieval city was located. Scientists are currently trying to restore the layout of the streets.
Establishing the location of ancient city highways is not an easy task, since there are modern buildings around.
- Such a tempting idea - to trace the street network of a medieval city - turned out to be practically insoluble. Too many digs, so we can only "catch" some streets in the sides, and some of the digs were completely destroyed,”explained Andrey Maslovsky, head of the archeology department of the Azov Museum-Reserve. - Still, we manage to restore something.
Thus, archaeologists have discovered a fairly large street running from north to south. It was the second to the west of the main city thoroughfare from the 14th century. A rainstorm trench and a pavement lined with fragments of ceramics and animal bones have survived to this day.
