In a research report published in The FASEB in April this year, scientists say that a cannabinoid receptor called "CB2" helps regulate sperm production. The research suggests a therapeutic strategy for treating male infertility.
The studies were carried out in the Department of Biomedicine and Prevention at the School of Medicine at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy. Professor Paola Grimaldi said that the main task of the work was to improve fertility in men due to the fact that infertility is a global problem and affects 15% of couples, in which 20 to 70 percent of the cause is male factor.
For the analysis, the scientists took three groups of mice and treated them with various agents for two to three weeks. The first group was treated with a specific activator of the CB2 receptor, the second - with a specific inhibitor of CB2, the third was a control group. The first group showed an acceleration of spermatogenesis, the second had weaker indicators.
Thus, scientists hope to create a new treatment for male infertility.
