In all religions of the world there is a concept of a terrible place - fiery hell, where after death the souls of terrible sinners fall.
Doors to the underworld
The first creepy underworld, later called Hell, was described by the Roman poet Publius Virgil Maron in his epic poem "Aeneid". No wonder it was Virgil who chose Dante as his guide in The Divine Comedy, where he described in detail the complex structure of the seven circles of hell, as he imagined it.
Nobody knows for certain how hell works, if it really exists, and where it is. Descriptions vary, but most often it is placed underground, in the underworld, where sinners are subjected to various punishments.
More than a dozen places in different parts of the earth are considered portals to the underworld. Among them is the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua, where Satan himself allegedly settled. In Turkmenistan, in the middle of the desert, there is a crater of Darvaza 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep, from which a flame bursts out - the locals call this place the door to hell. A flame bursts out of the ground on Mount Chimera near the Turkish village of Cirali. In Japan, the rocky mountain Osorezan with a poisonous lake is terrifying.

The country of violent volcanic activity is Iceland. Here, among other things, the Hekla ridge with a deep six-kilometer crack and the Naumaskard valley are noteworthy, where thermal sulfur springs emitting an extremely unpleasant odor, whose temperature reaches one hundred degrees Celsius, flow.
An incomparable sight
The underworld is often personified with volcanoes that caused superstitious horror. In ancient times, their vents were considered the entrances to the kingdom of Hades. Indeed, is there a more terrible and grandiose picture in the world than volcanic eruptions? An incomparable sight!
Sometimes a monstrous explosion blows the top of a mountain, and all living things perish for tens of kilometers around. Fiery fireworks burst over the volcano, clouds of smoke rise. Lightning flashes in them now and then. A fiery red lava flows out of the crater, emanating a strong heat. After the eruption, the area resembles a wild lifeless planet, covered with stones, a thick layer of solidified lava and compressed ash. The vents of volcanoes remain in the earth's crust - holes, usually round in shape, smoke swirls above them. In the craters of volcanoes, molten magma splashes, its light is reflected in the clouds, and a pungent smell of sulfur is spread in the air.
In some places, hot geysers, gases and smoke burst out of the ground. In the vicinity of the Tarawera volcano (New Zealand), a giant geyser of boiling water, mud and stones reaches a height of 400 meters!
In the state of Nevada in the USA there is the so-called Devil's Hole - an oval-section pipe with a diameter of about 9 by 12 meters, with sheer walls. It goes 120 meters into the ground and ends in an underground lake, the depth of which has never been measured.
Locals claim that this is the entrance to the underworld. Eyewitnesses swear that inhuman sounds are periodically heard from the Hole, and it is probably from there that the devil himself appears to do his atrocities on earth.
In Ireland there is a place where Jesus Christ showed Saint Patrick the entrance to the underworld, and the priests built there the chapel "Purgatory of St. Patrick."
