UFO reports varied greatly in reliability, judging by the number of witnesses, regardless of whether the witnesses were independent of each other, the conditions of observation (e.g. fog, haze, type of lighting) and the direction of sight.
Typically, witnesses who try to report a UFO believe that the object is of extraterrestrial origin, or perhaps a warship, but is certainly under intellectual control. This conclusion is usually based on what is perceived as a formation flying by many objects, unnatural - often sudden - movements, no sound, changes in brightness or color, and strange shapes.
It is well known that the naked eye is often mistaken. Bright light like the planet Venus often appears to be moving. Astronomical objects can also confuse drivers as they appear to "follow" the vehicle.
Visual impressions of the distance and speed of a UFO are also highly unreliable as they are based on an estimated size and are often created against an empty sky with no background object (clouds, mountains, etc.) to set the maximum distance.
Reflections from windows and glasses create overlaid images, and sophisticated optical systems such as camera lenses can transform point light sources into explicit flying saucers. Such optical illusions, the psychological desire to interpret images, is known to explain many visual reports of UFOs, and at least some of the sightings are false.
Radar observations, while more reliable in some respects, fail to distinguish between man-made objects and meteor trails, ionized gas, rain, or thermal irregularities in the atmosphere. "Contact events" such as Abductions are often associated with UFOs because they are attributed to alien visitors …
However, their credibility as an explanation for the abduction is disputed by most psychologists who have investigated the phenomenon. They speculate that a shared experience, known as sleep paralysis, may be the culprit, as it causes the sleepers to experience temporary immobility and belief that they are being watched.
