The intimate life of the Slavs was not particularly modest. In the pre-Christian era, the games of love of young men and women accompanied almost any holiday. Historians call the tradition of jumping over the fire on Ivan Kupala an erotic fun, because because of the jumps, the girls' skirts invariably lifted up, exposing all intimate places. By the 12th century, monks clearly reacted negatively to this tradition, saying that "here there is a great fall for men and youths on a girl's wobbling."

Sex invariably accompanied the pagan rites during the sowing season. The girls walked around the fields naked at night to share the power of childbearing with Mother Earth. Men, in turn, sowing the fields, also often undressed. According to beliefs, this is how the "marriage" was made between the workers and the land. Well, so that the harvest was good for sure, the Slavs had sex right on the field or imitated it, rolling back and forth.

In the 7th century, the concept of "harlot" arose, but then it did not have a negative connotation. Those girls who are looking for a husband for themselves (consonant with "wandering") were called harlots. Among the few descriptions of the sexual traditions of the Slavs, there is information that in the VIII century, the day before the wedding, the wise men had to deprive the bride of her virginity in the bath. Based on the "Tale of Bygone Years", one can find out that in Russia in some places polygamy was practiced. The Byzantine historian Procopius Kemariysky, describing the life of the Eastern Slavs, noted that one family could have from two to four wives. The fact of the polygamy of Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich is widely known. Only the official chosen ones he had twelve, this is not counting 800 concubines.

With the strengthening of the position of Christianity in Russia, the topic of sex becomes more taboo. Now only spouses were allowed to do it, and even then in a missionary position. Of course, there were always enough of those who lived "in sin", so at confession people had to tell about all their adventures. Among the manuscripts, there have been preserved missives, which indicate questions about intimate life, which the priest had to ask confessing. As a punishment for adultery, prayers with numerous bows were relied from 3 to 10 years.
The church was forbidden to have sex while standing, since the possibility of getting pregnant in such a position was reduced. And this meant that such a situation was "not for childbearing, but for the sake of weakness." Only the “missionary position” was considered “correct”. The reaction of the people to such prohibitions was not long in coming. In the pre-Petrine era, there was a popular saying: "Sin is when your feet are up, and when you let go, God forgave."
