The Skellig Islands are actually just two tiny rocky islands. Despite their size, these islands are majestic and legendary. The first mention of the islands can be found already at the end of the 5th century in the legends and myths of Ireland.

The first island, plainly called Little Skelly, is unfortunately closed to visitors. The thing is that an incredible number of birds live on the island - more than 50 thousand and human invasion of such a large nesting site is completely undesirable. However, no one forbids going around the island by boat, which is certainly worth doing if you have the opportunity to do so.

The second island, called Skellig Michael, is much better known for its medieval monastery. The monastery was founded presumably in the 6th century and existed cut off from the rest of the world. The monks lived in complete isolation, in rough stone houses, on bare rocks, which, given the harsh climate of the Atlantic Ocean, was a true triumph of spirit over matter. The monastery existed for about 7 centuries, and later became a place of pilgrimage for Christians, which remains to this day. The monastery, due to its remoteness and inaccessibility, is perfectly preserved and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world.
