How many people have been telling us (some quite possibly sincerely) that the dungeons were created "to escape from the enemy." Looking at these very, complex, well-thought-out and beautiful structures, the thought naturally comes that you don't have to build so much and so difficult to escape. Or again the old song about the main thing: hundreds of millions of slaves built these dungeons, and fifty and a half inhabitants provided them with food, clothing and guarded them, otherwise they would flee, how then can they secretly escape from the enemy? And so, apparently, thought all over the world. They built it sparing no effort or money. (when did you manage to fight?). And then think, if the enemy comes, let the people scatter in different directions, at least along the left tunnel, at least in the right one turns, at least up or down.
I think that the water and dry tunnels served as "ifsound lines". Infrasound is created by the turbulence of water (and not only) and is carried out in it, perhaps for this all these forks and drops in tunnels, in order to create turbulence and infrasound of different frequencies. And also ifrasound is capable of creating fog like "milk". Apparently in the first photo it is this effect.

But the next photo makes me especially happy and even touches, the master looks so responsibly)). Modern civilization has recognized that it does not reach the technological heights of the past civilization. And they began to restore what is still possible. Moreover, the real purpose of these tunnels was also recognized: IN NIZHNY NOVGOROD, ANCIENT STORM SEWERAGE IS RESTORED. (Official historians are probably crying, but what about "moves in case of an attack"?).

The photo is dated 1874. As you can see, the masonry is still strong.
And such structures are under every ancient city. Even in our small Sarapul, as they said recently, all the churches were connected by underground passages. My acquaintance in his youth with friends dug a tunnel, but they were afraid to go there. In the summer we are going to "go through the places of military glory", let's see what is left there.
At the end of April I went to see the restoration work. Previously, there was the Ascension Cathedral and a shopping arcade nearby. They are now being restored. The photo shows an arched vault, covered with modern bricks. If it was a move, it went exactly under the church. Let's see what happens after the restoration, maybe part of the premises will be opened.
