Scientists from Concordia University (Canada) have found the cause of the "death zone", that is, an area of low temperature and density, inside the tornado. The corresponding study was published in the Journal of Aircraft, briefly reported by The Daily Mail.
"As the air pockets (the alternation of ascending and descending flows in a turbulent medium - approx." Lenta.ru ") move from the outer periphery of the vortex to its center, they expand, as a result of which the temperature and density drop," - notes the lead author of the study Georgis Vatistas. He noted that his team "was able to determine the cause of the temperature drop inside the vortices for the first time in history."
Computer simulations carried out by scientists showed that the temperature inside the tornado dropped from 27 to 12 degrees Celsius, and in the center of the tornado, the air density dropped by 20 percent. Approximately the same conditions, as noted by experts, take place in the mountains at an altitude of about eight kilometers.
Thus, scientists have solved the long-standing mystery associated with a tornado that struck the city of Scottsbluff in Nebraska (USA) in 1955. Then, in the center of the tornado, a sharp decrease in temperature and oxygen content was recorded.
