In late September 2018, a rare Mediterranean hurricane ruined the velvet season in Greece and Turkey. And soon the planet will be ironed out by hurricanes of the 7th category.

MEDITERRANEAN HURRICANE NAMED AFTER ZORBA

The Mediterranean hurricane at the end of September 2018 badly dampened the velvet season for tourists in Greece and Turkey. For a strange atmospheric vortex, the term medicane was invented, from the English words Mediterranean (Mediterranean) and hurricane (hurricane). In Russian I don't even know which is better: Euroragan?

In fact, hurricanes are not typical for Europe at all, they usually iron out the Caribbean, the USA and Mexico. We are not talking about hurricane force winds, such as in Moscow, but about hurricanes as a meteorological phenomenon - in the photo from satellites it looks like a giant funnel of clouds with an “eye” in the center.

The Mediterranean hurricane was named Zorba. And meteorologists give their own names only to those atmospheric vortices that are especially powerful and capable of causing trouble. "Zorba" confirmed that he was worthy.

At the end of last week and especially on Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, usually sunny Greece was watered with rains, stormy winds and flooded with waves. In some areas, several monthly precipitation rates fell over the weekend. For comparison, if in Moscow a third of the monthly norm of rain falls per day, we are already talking about "super-storm" and "flood".

Due to the storm, ferries did not run between the islands and the mainland. The wind turbine disrupted the operation of airports. Both Athens and the islands had problems with electricity. The most powerful storm hit the resorts: Crete, Cyclades, islands in the Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese peninsula. In general, both tourists and Greeks will remember the weather "sirtaki" performed by hurricane "Zobra" for a long time. Turkey and the south of Italy also got it, albeit milder.

STORM FROM "FORMULA 1"

And by the way - another forecast about a changing climate: hurricanes (they are also tropical storms) of the 6th and 7th categories will appear on Earth. Now the most powerful are of the 5th category, the wind speed in them reaches 250 km / h and more. Last year, there were two such monsters, the notorious Irma and Maria. Demolished roofs and entire houses, trees uprooted, death and destruction in vast territories …

Category 4 and 5 hurricanes are already being formed twice as often as 40 years ago, in the 1970s. But this, it turns out, is not the limit.

If the hurricanes - "five" are so terrible, then how will they gather the 6th and 7th categories? People will know this already in this century, climatologists predict. By the end of the 21st century, the wind in tropical storms will whistle at speeds up to 370 km / h. This is the maximum speed to which Formula 1 cars can accelerate.

But that's not all. Global warming makes cyclones, including tropical storms, more saturated with moisture (in warm air it “fits” more). Water pours out of the clouds in rains - by the end of the century, each hurricane will bring 25% more rain than now. However, this also applies to other cyclones.

The routes along which hurricanes move are also changing. They are most often born in the Caribbean or over the Gulf of Mexico. Previously, we walked along a trajectory in the form of a comma. And it was generally clear who would be covered. Now hurricanes now and then rush in different directions and fall with all their might on the territories that are north and east of their usual routes. Well at least they won't get to Russia, it's too far.
