As we know, doubles are people of the same sex, very similar to each other. Sometimes they are twins, but often they are completely strangers. Doubles have found and are finding practical use. When, during World War II, British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery of Alameinsky (or simply Monty), being at the secret command headquarters, was in charge of preparing an attack by an Allied army group into Nazi-occupied France, he was replaced by a military official and amateur actor Clifton-James. He later published his memoirs which he called "I was Monty's double."
There are not unfounded suspicions that in 1941 the deputy Fuehrer for the party Rudolf Hess, shortly before the secret "trip" to Great Britain for negotiations on a separate peace, was killed by the envious Nazis. Hess was allegedly replaced by a double, whom the British interned, and later, at the Nuremberg Trials, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in Berlin's Spandau prison. After 32 years of imprisonment, during one of the medical examinations, doctors noticed that there was not a single trace on his body from many of the wounds that Hess received, as it was reliably known, during the hostilities …
There is also a more sensational assumption: the charred bodies of two people, found in 1945 in a Berlin bunker, were allegedly not at all Adolf Hitler and his partner Eva Braun, with whom he took his own life on April 30, 1945, but their counterparts …
But, in addition to such physical twins, which have a purely external similarity, there are twins of a completely different kind.

Winter 1946 - A demobilized American soldier, Gordon Burroughs, is heading home. He wanted to be home as soon as possible, and therefore was at the wheel of an old Ford for 18 hours. Gordon was very tired and chilled, and when it began to darken and the landscapes of the remote corners of Wyoming stretched on both sides of the road, which were not at all monotonous, he began to fall asleep, which became increasingly difficult to fight.
Gathering his last strength, he drove through the town of Laramie and behind the last houses suddenly saw a lonely "voting" man on the sidelines. The soldier slowed down beside him and at that moment thought that due to fatigue he began a hallucination: the young man standing by the car was an exact copy of himself. The only difference between them was in their clothes: the stranger was wearing a summer uniform, but he, apparently, felt absolutely normal in it, despite the fact that the weather was frosty.
In the car, the strangers offered to drive the car so that Gordon could rest and sleep a little, to which the soldier happily agreed. He almost instantly fell asleep and slept for several hours, and waking up to find that the car was standing on the side of the road, and the mysterious fellow traveler was sitting motionless in the driver's seat. Seeing that Gordon woke up, he left the car without saying anything and walked off the road straight into the "open field". Rested and slept Gordon went on, thinking about this strange meeting …
Such doubles as Gordon Burroughs, who provided assistance on the road, are called by experts - as opposed to physical or bodily - "spiritual doubles." It has been found that people tend to see them late at night or at dawn, and when under stress or extreme fatigue.
Such doubles, called doppelgangers or autocopies, have been known for a long time. Back in his time, the Greek philosopher Aristotle, who lived in the 4th century BC. e., wrote about a man who, going out for a walk, each time met his double. Among the ancient Persians, the existence of ghost twins was generally considered an absolutely normal phenomenon.

And here is what the great German writer J. W. Goethe told in a circle of close friends Once in Alsace he was heading home after a horse ride and on the way he met his own double. He saw him for only a few seconds, but had time to see that gray and yellow colors predominated in his clothes.
Goethe was not a superstitious person and did not attach much importance to the mysterious meeting. An even more surprising incident happened with a businessman from New York, Erickson Gorik. 1955 - he went on business for his company to Oslo, where he had never been before. But the receptionist at the hotel greeted him as an old acquaintance, saying that he was very pleased to see him again. The businessman was surprised, but decided that the receptionist had simply confused him with someone. However, Gorik's surprise knew no bounds, when the next day, having told trading partners by phone about the purpose of his arrival, he heard in response that after all, all the questions about the deal of interest to him had been resolved during his previous visit!
Some of the researchers believe that this kind of phenomenon is a consequence of the so-called projection of thought - impatient anticipation and figurative presentation by a person of upcoming events, intense thinking about him, combined with great willpower. This hypothesis is confirmed by the existing cases of "ghosts of crisis situations", when a ghost of a person appears before the eyes of relatives and friends, who at this time is experiencing excessive physical or emotional stress.

However, the above hypothesis fails to provide an explanation for cases like the one that happened about 150 years ago in Massachusetts and was witnessed by Pastor Mountford. The pastor came to visit his friends who were expecting a couple of their relatives that afternoon. before the arrival of the guests, the whole company left the house to meet them by the road.
Soon a horse-drawn carriage appeared in the distance. But as she approached the house, she swept past, and the couple in her did not pay any attention to those who met. Before the company had time to recover from surprise, the same carriage appeared on the road again, and from the same direction as the first time. But now the carriage stopped, and the spouses who left it warmly greeted the owners of the house and everyone who met …
The researchers tried to explain what happened in different ways. Perhaps, some thought, one of the approaching people subconsciously sent those who met the image of an approaching carriage. Others thought it was a group hallucination.
The omnipresent teacher
The phenomenon of dowsing is also associated with the appearance of twins. The most famous and reliable case of its manifestation dates back to the 19th century and is associated with the name of a teacher from France Emilia Saji, who was repeatedly seen at the same time in several places. As soon as she thought about home during classes or remembered that she needed to go to the store, her ghost double would immediately appear there. The school authorities strongly disliked this; therefore, the woman was forced to often change jobs, and subsequently retire early.
It may, of course, be that, meeting our acquaintance, who, as we know, is at this time in a completely different place, we simply take one person for another. Moreover, there are people "like two peas in a pod" similar to each other - it is not for nothing that various contests and festivals of twins are held in many countries. And yet, many of the cases of the appearance of twins baffle orthodox scientists. And also not orthodox …
