According to new research, the planet entered a new geological era known as the Anthropocene in 1965. The findings were made by a group of scientists led by representatives of the University of New South Wales, according to the Daily Mail.

Scientists were able to mark a new era due to a radiocarbon peak or "golden thorn" found in the heart of a strange and unusual tree, Sith spruce, located on Campbell Island. The Golden Spike was created as the culmination of testing of atmospheric thermonuclear bombs within the Northern Hemisphere in the 1950s and 1960s.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the atmospheric radiocarbon peak occurred in 1964, where the signal persisted in European trees. The same peak until the end of 1965 reached the atmosphere of the Southern Hemisphere. With this spruce, the signal became global, accurate and detectable in the geological record, that is, it met the requirements as a marker of a new era. The 100-year-old tree is itself an anomaly in the Southern Ocean.

“Somehow it seems that this unusual tree, planted far from normal human habitat, also became a marker of the changes we have made to Earth,” said co-author Professor Mark Maslin. "This is further proof that in this new era, no part of our planet remains untouched by man."
