In 1997, in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, hydrophones recorded a mysterious "gurgle". Loud, ultra-low-frequency sound was heard by underwater stations located at a distance of more than 5000 km from each other.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is investigating the nature of this mystical sound. The most popular version was that the mysterious "gurgle" belongs to an unknown giant sea animal. Over time, such a theory was overgrown with a mass of legends and raised it to the level of a great mystery.
Nevertheless, NOAA believes that the sound does not belong to an animal, and there is nothing mystical about it. Most likely, scientists suggest, it arises as a result of a rather banal phenomenon - the split of the Antarctic ice shelf. All supporters of this version believe that this reveals the secret of the origin of the sound. It was confirmed by Oregon seismologist Robert Dzyak. And the stories that the "mega-gurgle" tricks of a giant sea monster are nothing more than fantasy, and they don't even smell like science.
Dziak explained that "the frequency and duration of the sound are quite consistent and, in fact, identical to the sound made by cracking ice floes." They recorded it during their stay in Antarctica. According to the seismologist, scientists began acoustic research in Bransfield Strait and Drake Passage in 2005. It lasted until 2010. Through acoustic analysis, it became clear that icebreaker sounds are the dominant source of natural sounds in the Southern Ocean. Every year, tens of thousands of times occurs what is called an "icequake", from which sea ice cracks and melts, they are separated from the glaciers and sent to the ocean. All this is accompanied by the characteristic sound "BULK".
All this practically reduces to zero the chances that the sound that has disturbed the planet may belong to an animal. And in fact, the researchers note, no one took this version seriously, just people wanted a great secret.
In addition, Robert Dzyak shed light, the sound heard in the video is simply accelerated, which is why it seems that it is reproduced by an animal, and if you listen to it in real mode, it looks more like thunder. There is even an opinion that the sound was simply distorted by equipment interference. According to the seismologist, almost all sounds can be divided into several categories: geophysical (underwater volcanoes and earthquakes), weather (storms, waves, wind), anthropogenic (ships, pneumatic weapons), ice (sea ice, icebergs, shoals), and animals (cetaceans, fish). Everything else is usually just a kind of electronic signal interference.
However, adds Dziak, he understands why people so easily believed in the theory that the "gurgle" belongs to the sea giant. The depths of the ocean are still only five percent explored by mankind. In New Zealand, for example, a whale recently washed ashore the likes of which humans have never seen. So, we only know that we know very little about the ocean depths.
By the way, the place where the sound was first heard is located just 1760 km from the location of the sunken city of R'lyeh, where, according to Lovecraft, the mythical monster Cthulhu is imprisoned deep in the ocean floor in its underwater dungeon.
