There are many legends and rumors around this house. Its construction began in 1902 by order of Dmitry Orlov. The project itself has been borrowed or stolen, according to rumors. The same house was planned in St. Petersburg, but the project was not implemented, but a similar house appeared in Kiev. Dmitry Orlov managed to legalize illegal construction thanks to bribes. In 1904, when the construction was coming to an end, an unexpected fire left only the walls of the house. It was rumored that Orlov was not very generous and did not fully pay off the builders, who, in turn, took revenge and planted eggshells in the chimney, which created eerie sounds. The owner planned to turn the castle into a tenement building and rent out the apartments. In 1908, Orlov took out loans secured by the house, but was soon killed. It was difficult for the widow to pay off her debts, so she was forced to sell the castle. The house was resold many times, not a single owner stayed for a long time. Here groans, crying, howling and mysterious steps were heard. Rumor has it that residents of the "Richard's Castle" and nearby houses complained of malaise and strange bites. The aura of mysticism has always enveloped "Richard's Castle", which scared off many people, but this fact attracted creative people, for this reason many famous artists, sculptors, writers and other creative personalities lived in the house.
You can learn a lot about the castle and its inhabitants in the “Museum of One Street”, which presents the belongings of the residents of the house, the works of artists living in the castle, as well as old photographs and plans of the castle.
Owners and residents changed over the years, and in 1920, Richard's Castle was nationalized. From then until 1983, the Soviet government used the house as communal housing. And since 1983 to this day, the castle has been empty, although there were many projects and plans, but not one has yet come true.

Castle name
There are different versions of the origin of the name. One of the most plausible is the version according to which the name of the castle was given by the writer Nekrasov. In 1967, he wrote about how, as a child, he and his friends played in the courtyard of this house and imagined that it was an ancient castle and named it after Richard the Lionheart, the hero of the novel Ivanhoe.
There is also a version that it was named after the real Richard Yurevich, who lived in the house for many years and was a famous joker and storyteller, with whom Viktor Nekrasov was also familiar. There was a warm and friendly relationship between them. Nekrasov called his friend Richard the Lionheart.
For a long time, "Richard's Castle" was called the "Haunted House".

"Richard's Castle" was built in the British Gothic style. It has elements typical of castles such as spiers, towers and others. The architect is unknown. For a long time this work was attributed to the Kiev architect Gorodetsky, since the style is very similar to his, but in fact Gorodetsky has nothing to do with him.
