The Chinese village of Zhongdong in Guizhou province is considered the only settlement inside a natural cave with a permanent population.
You can get to the cave at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level in at least an hour. Due to such inaccessibility, residents have no choice but to try to survive in any conditions.
In early 2011, the government closed the village school, stating that "China is not a cave society." Children now have to walk for 2 hours in the morning and in the evening to study at the school nearest to the village.

To improve the living conditions of their residents, the elders do their best to convince the government to build a road that could link the village to nearby infrastructure. Indeed, even though Zhongdong has access to television and sometimes newspapers, the village still remains largely cut off from the outside world.
About 100 people live in the village inside the cave. Every week they buy the necessary groceries at a store 15 kilometers from the village and carry it all home on foot.
