Trees help fight global warming not only by their ability to recycle carbon dioxide. The latest study, published in Nature Climate Change, reveals a recently studied process of heat transfer between the earth's surface and the air shell supported by trees. “Forests are not only the“lungs”of the Earth, but also a component of the process of exchange of water and energy, which is most important for the climate, between the planet's surface and its atmospheric masses. Simply put, trees contribute to the cooling of the planet, which is extremely important for all living things,”says one of the leading authors of the study, a fellow at Ohio University (USA), Kaiguan Zhao.
Scientists have realized the true role of trees in maintaining the climate thanks to a new computer model created from satellite and meteorological data.
“It turned out that near-surface heat transfer is associated with trees to a much greater extent than we previously thought,” the scientists conclude.
According to which, the preservation of forests, in this light, is even more important for the environment than it is believed.
