The reason may be the gravitational pull of Nemesis, which orbits the Sun in an orbit 1.5 light years from Earth, disrupting the Oort cloud - a cluster of icy asteroids that lies 0.8-3 light years beyond Pluto's orbit and is weakly bound by the Sun's gravity … It is the Oort cloud that is the source of the "long-period" comets that return to the inner solar system every two hundred years.
Nemesis should be a red or brown dwarf no larger than Jupiter. It is too far from the Earth and at such a distance it is difficult to see it even with the use of the most powerful telescopes.
Astrophysicist Adrian Melott of the University of Kansas and paleontologist Richard Bambach of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, studied the fossils and confirmed that mass extinctions recur every 26-30 million years.
By combining all the latest data, paleontologists, astrophysicists and astronomers came to the conclusion that the waves of mass extinction should not be caused by Nemesis, but by the influence of another planet - Planet X.
