Researchers from Chile have found a strange pattern - ancient mummies, which are more than seven thousand years old, turn into black mucus due to high levels of humidity.
Experts do not know how to deal with this problem, but they want to preserve a collection of ancient remains found in the north of the country. Residents of Chile wrote an appeal to the UN and UNESCO with a request to recognize the mummies as objects of cultural heritage, otherwise the oldest exhibits could disappear from the face of the Earth. The mucus formed on mummies is the result of the work of bacteria that actively develop on the skin of corpses.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, about three hundred ancient mummies have been discovered in the northern part of Chile - from babies to adults. Dating back to 5050 BC, such finds are currently the oldest mummies on the planet.
If in Egypt it was customary to mummify only noble people, then on the territory of modern Chile all the dead people were mummified, hence there are so many terrible finds. It is believed that ancient people were massively poisoned with arsenic, which got into drinking water from nearby volcanoes. In order to prevent the spread of the poison, the dead were mummified.
