You can't live without the Sun, no
It would seem, and so it is clear to everyone: the Earth does not rotate, but stands firmly (otherwise we would have felt!) - on the backs of three elephants and one big wise turtle. But scientists (what weirdos!) Somehow disagree … So, how does the Earth rotate? The time-lapse video of our planet spinning in space shows a dizzying dance of clouds from the perspective of a satellite 1.6 million kilometers away. In two and a half minutes of the video, a whole earth year fits.
Timelap video created from 3000 images of NASA Deep Space Observatory (DSCOVR) images. The satellite is located in a gravitationally stable place in space between the Earth and the Sun, known as the L1 Lagrange point.
"The EPIC camera takes a new image every 2 hours … capturing the shifting movement of clouds and weather systems, the details of the terrestrial landscape - deserts, forests and blue spots - the seas," writes NASA. "The camera allows scientists to monitor the levels of ozone and aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere, the height of clouds, the properties of vegetation and the reflectivity of the Earth in the UV range."
The video slows down to show the Moon's shadow sweeping across Earth in March 2016, during a total lunar eclipse.
The main scientific goal of the Deep Space Observatory is to monitor the flow of charged particles that fly away from the Sun. The phenomenon is known as solar wind. Detailed forecasts of solar wind intensity help researchers provide real-time notification of solar activity that can affect satellites and power lines.
