A recent poll of Internet users from around the world showed that 41 percent of people had prophetic dreams.

And if you remember all the greatest poets, writers and composers who worked under the influence of dreams, then it becomes obvious: people are able to receive some important information for them about the future. But who is sending it and where from?

Elena Korabelnikova, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, member of the Professional Psychotherapeutic League and the International Dream Research Association, spoke about this at the recent 1st International Medical Congress "Brain Ecology: The Art of Interaction with the Environment" held in Moscow recently.

“Research carried out in our laboratory of the Sleep Medicine Department has shown that one of a thousand dreams comes true,” Elena Alexandrovna immediately struck the audience with the exact figure. - It is they who are remembered and replicated, and the rest are forgotten.

But how do nighttime prophecies come true?

According to the professor, there are several completely non-mystical ways that help dreams come true.

1. Dreams - inferences, when a person in a dream is able to analyze the situation, find a way out of it and, thus, build a correct forecast, which then comes true.

2. Self-fulfilling predictions, when a person is so impressed with his dream that he subconsciously leads himself to its fulfillment. For example, a student is preparing to enter a university, but suddenly he dreams that he is failing the exam. He is so amazed by what he saw that he stops learning, sets himself up for the worst, and in reality does not act.

- But there are dreams that until now are not clear to science and which, perhaps, contain information that is capable of predicting events, - Professor Korabelnikova admitted. And she gave two famous cases …

ABOUT THE STONE ON SHALYAPIN'S CHEST …

So, the artist Konstantin Korovin dreamed of the death of the singer Fyodor Chaliapin. In it, Chaliapin appeared to him and persistently asked for help: to remove the heavy stone that was pressing on him from his chest. Korovin tried to help him, but in vain - the stone seemed to be firmly adhered to the maestro's chest. And two weeks later, the great bass died in Paris. Korovin himself survived only one year of the great singer and his prophetic dream.

… AND ABOUT LOMONOSOV, THE FOUND FATHER

Once, when Lomonosov was returning to Russia from Germany, on the way he had a disturbing dream. He clearly saw the crashed ship of his father, thrown by the waves on the rocky uninhabited shore. The father lived in the Arkhangelsk province, where the scientist had to go. There his fears were confirmed. His brother told him that there had been no news from his father since four months ago he and the crew went to sea to fish. Lomonosov returned to the capital to take a vacation and personally go in search of his father, but urgent matters forced him to stay.

Then the scientist did the last thing in his power: he wrote a letter to the fishermen he knew “asking them to come to the island when they first set out on the fishery, whose position and view of the shores he described to them accurately and in detail from a dream; they would have searched all over the place, and if they found the body of their father, they would have buried him. This unusual letter was soon followed by an equally unusual response. The amazed fishermen reported that, according to the description from the dream, they found exactly the same uninhabited island, on the shore of which they really found not only the remains of a ship broken by a storm, but also the bodies of the sailors themselves. It was on this rocky island that Lomonosov's father was finally buried.

INSULATION IN BED

- Elena Alexandrovna, but this is some kind of mysticism! How can you foresee the death of loved ones, and even the place where the misfortune happened?

- I think that this is not mysticism, but simply the information that comes to us through unknown channels. Perhaps, indeed, some people have a very good ability to predict future events on the basis of some of their unconscious knowledge. I am confident that science in the future must answer these questions.

- And where do scientists and artists get insights in a dream?

“We call this phenomenon the creative function of sleep. A textbook example is Mendeleev's discovery of the table of chemical elements. Before he dreamed of it in finished form, he worked on it for a very long time and unsuccessfully. But he opened it in a dream, not because he fell asleep sweetly, but because he came close to the opening when it was time to go to bed. Less well known is the story of the invention of the sewing machine.

ABOUT PEOPLE AND SEWING NEEDLES

The first sewing machines were born in the middle of the nineteenth century, giving their developers a lot of trouble. They even had to tinker with the needle, as it quickly became clear that an ordinary sewing needle with an eye on the top was not suitable for a machine. The thread stretching from above interfered with the mechanism, and the designers inevitably had to look for another solution.

So, the American mechanic Elias Howe in 1844 saw a real nightmare. In a dream, he was captured by cannibals who threatened to kill him if he did not immediately come up with a sewing machine! Despite his fear, Howe noticed the strange spears in the hands of the savages: holes were made in their tips. Only when he woke up, it dawned on him - the eye in the needle should be in the same place as the copies of the savages from his dream: at the very tip, below. Since then, all sewing machines have just such "cannibalistic" needles.

“Inventions in a dream occur because creativity is associated with the activity of the right hemisphere, and it is also activated in a dream,” explains Elena Aleksandrovna. - Therefore, in essence, dreams become a prerequisite for bold ideas and decisions among creative people. Indeed, in a dream, the inventor is not disturbed by the signals of the outside world and he remains alone with himself, concentrates on the most important business for him, from which he is constantly distracted while awake. Creativity is the ability to present information in an extraordinary way, to deviate from templates. And dreams present us with such an opportunity.

- Do dream books help to reveal the secret meaning of dreams?

- The problem with dream books is that they recognize universal symbolism for completely different people. And dreams for each of us are unique, because they depend on different factors: gender, age, which hemisphere is dominant - right or left, the level of intelligence, emotional state, personality traits, stressful events, health status, etc. Therefore, for scientists, dream books have only a cultural significance: they only reflect the spirit of their time.

By the way, a very recent study by Korabelnikova showed that left-handers are much more likely than right-handers to have multi-part dreams! When falling asleep again, the dream continues from the point from which it was interrupted.
