Day after day, Julia McCabe's relatives take turns on duty at the hospital, hoping for a miracle. The woman has been in a coma for 3 weeks. According to doctors, the chances that she will come to her senses are negligible - only 8 percent. And even if this happens, Julia will not be a full-fledged person, her brain is seriously injured.
The tragedy struck the day a 38-year-old woman decided to dye her hair. I bought a regular set of "Loreal" in the storefor a home hairdresser, applied hair dye and after a few minutes fell unconscious. At first, Julia's husband could not believe that it was all about paint. According to him, his wife dyed her gray hair every 6 weeks and never suffered from allergies. However, according to doctors, everything indicates that the problem must be looked for in the paint - after all, a bad reputation has already been fixed for it.
It's all to blame - a substance with a difficult to pronounce name - paraphenylenediamine … It is found in 99 percent of all paints sold in stores. However, paraphenylenediamine is known to doctors as a contact allergen and a carcinogen that causes severe allergic reactions. This substance is banned in Sweden, Germany and France. Oxidizing hair dyes containing paraphenylenediamine simply cannot enter the markets of these countries. All the paints that are sold there, and it is written - "does not contain paraphenylenediamine." It was almost abandoned in the States, where this substance is suspected of being able to cause bladder cancer in humans. Doctors say that allergy to paint with paraphenylenediamine is very rare, but extensive. The main thing is that it may not appear immediately after the first hair coloring. It happens that a woman uses paint from the same company many times,after which a strong allergic reaction occurs.
Now the cosmetic kit that Julia McCabe used has been taken by doctors for analysis. The cosmetic company "Loreal" also joined the investigation, and its specialists are ready to provide assistance to both the doctors and the victim's family.
Meanwhile, the country began a campaign to ban the hazardous substance. Several dozen people affected by such paints hired lawyers. They, in turn, appealed to the government to take action and restrict access to the British market for products containing paraphenylenediamine. One of the law firms even began collecting signatures for a petition to parliament for the hair dye case to be considered in the House of Commons.
In the meantime, doctors recommend that all ladies first try the dye on the skin area each time before applying it to the hair. This rule, by the way, has long been introduced in many British salons. It is not possible to get to the hairdresser for coloring or highlighting in them immediately, but only 48 hours after testing the paint on the skin.
