The researchers observed corn yields and found that as the average annual temperature rises, the growth period of the cereal and its accumulated mass decreases. Corn today remains one of the main crops in the world.
Africa is expected to suffer the most. Due to the high air temperature, some plant species will not be able to grow on this continent. Corn yields will also decline in other parts of the world.
The specified culture is negatively affected by the high temperature of the air and soil - drought arises from it, the dormancy period is reduced and the accumulated biomass decreases. At the same time, scientists are talking about other plants used in agriculture - they will also be affected by climate change.
Due to such changes, yields will decrease by 2018, and in another 12 years, corn will not be able to grow not only in Africa, but also around the world.
The researchers carried out a computer analysis of corn, taking into account the yield of the crop, the timing of its ripening and other agronomic properties. As a result, it turned out that in ten years, corn, along with other cereals, may become a scarce product, which will cause widespread hunger on Earth.
