Canadian Eskimo hunters and Inuit from the Igloolik settlement began to hear a mysterious dull sound, which seems to come from the bottom of the ocean. This rumble has already scared away many animals and fish, on which the traditional crafts of the northerners depend.
The Canadian newspaper CBC reports that locals initially added a mysterious buzz to the mining companies, and some even suggested that Greenpeace activists who are trying to sabotage the work of geologists were involved in the sound. However, both company representatives and Greenpeace say they have no idea where the sound comes from.
The noise appeared and disappeared all summer and autumn and managed to scare away many of the marine animals that Eskimos and Inuit usually hunt. The waters of Fox Bay have become almost lifeless. Hunters claim that only birds remained on the shores in the vicinity of Iglulik, and not a single seal.
When all possible attempts to explain the origin of the noise were exhausted, the administration of the settlement turned directly to the Canadian Department of Defense with a request to find out what was scaring away fish and seals. The investigation began in October.
This is not the first time this has happened in Canada. For several years, residents of the Windsor village of Lake Ontario have complained of noise of unknown origin. Blast furnaces were suspected, but the expert commission could not identify any irregularities in their work. The latest report from 2014 states that the source of the noise could not be identified, but it is associated with industrial facilities, which are very numerous around small Windsor.
