At least, this is how the police of the city of Challapata explain the inexplicable escape from the station.
An unusual incident happened recently in a small Bolivian town located near the dried-up Lake Poopo. At about eleven in the evening, the local police station received a call about the capture of a thief in one of the shops. The law enforcement officers who went to the call arrested a young man who identified himself as Hugo Torrelio. The thief, who tried to open the cash register and got caught when the store owner unexpectedly returned for the keys left behind, had no documents with him, so the police doubted the authenticity of the name.
The arrested Torrelio was put in a preliminary detention cell, intending to subsequently bring him to trial. However, at night the young man ran away. At the same time, a video surveillance camera installed in the corridor leading to the bullpen showed how the door automatically pushed aside and Ugo quietly steps out of the confinement. The police have already been accused of negligence, claiming that they did not lock the door; however, the same camera shows how the law enforcement officers close the bolt before leaving.
