The most mysterious and enigmatic place in the Czech Republic is the legendary Houska Castle. It was built in the 13th century, about 50 km from Prague. When religious people find out why this magnificent castle was built, they literally lose their footing.

The fact is that the Gouska Castle was built over a deep well, where the bottom is not visible. According to an old legend, the bottomless pit was positioned as a gateway to hell. To protect themselves from the devil's forces, people buried a well and built a chapel over it.

History of the famous castle

Historians say that before the stone castle there was a wooden fortress on this place. It was built by Prince Slavibor for his son Gousek, after whom the building was named.

After a long time, practically nothing remained of the wooden structure. Then, at the beginning of the 13th century, the king of Bohemia Přemysl Otakar II decided to build the castle in stone. After the war, the building was destroyed and rebuilt in the Renaissance style. For a long time, the castle has changed many noble and famous owners.

The fortress even survived the Second World War. During the hostilities, German soldiers settled there. In the 50s, the castle was given over to the state library. In the 90s, the building returned to its former owners. They also reconstructed the Gousek Castle so that tourists can enjoy the beauty of architectural art.

The mystery of the devil's pit

For a long time, the locals have been saying that there is a bottomless pit under the historical building. If you still get to the bottom of the mystical well, then you can go straight to hell. No one has ever dared to descend into this ominous funnel.

There is a legend that one of the owners, burning out of curiosity, decided to reveal the secret of the hell hole. He took advantage of prisoners sentenced to death.

The criminal was promised complete freedom in exchange for exploring the devil's dungeon. He quickly agreed and descended into uncharted space. The suicide bomber did not even imagine what horror awaits him ahead.

After going down a few meters, the heartrending cries of a prisoner with requests for help were heard. When they lifted him up, the man's face was struck with a grimace of horror, and his hair turned white. He lost his mind and kept repeating that he had met face to face with the devil himself. Instead of the long-awaited freedom, the criminal died a few days after the terrible experiment.

The locals were very scared. Therefore, they began to fill the terrible hole with cobblestones, but the efforts were useless. The stones seemed to be sucked in by a black hole, and it was not possible to brick the well. It took the owner of the castle three years to get rid of the mystical pit.

To make sure that the people are no longer in danger, a chapel was erected over the infernal well.
