After the revolution, many noble families fled abroad, taking with them in a hurry only the essentials. Many managed to take out the family jewels in various ways, some were a little less fortunate. The richest family of Naryshkins was not lucky. Their richest collection of sets and cutlery made of precious metals by the best Russian and French craftsmen remained in Russia.

In 2012, during the restoration of the Naryshkins' mansion in St. Petersburg, workers found a secret room where family treasures were hidden. It turned out to be the largest in modern Russia: more than 2 thousand pieces of jewelry - samovars, saucepan, salt shakers, forks, spoons, dishes, pallets … And all of them are made of precious metals.

Each element was carefully packed, and among all this luxury were found documents of Sergei Somov - the husband of the daughter of the last owner of the mansion. Most likely, Somov took part in the concealment of the treasure, but later he emigrated and died without leaving heirs, so no one knew about the treasure for a long time.

After several years of study, the experts donated the jewelry to the Tsarskoye Selo Museum and now about 700 items from the “Naryshkin hoard” have been exhibited for the first time to the general public.

You can see the jewelry until March 24, 2020 in the Catherine Palace of the Tsarskoe Selo Museum-Reserve.
