Having examined the cracks, experts state that in some places the soil has already begun to sink. According to Vadim Mikhailov, the head of the Diggerspace detachment, "emergency measures must be taken; it is not like holding parades on Red Square - you cannot walk."
To find out the cause of the faults, a special commission was created. It turned out that the foundations of all historical buildings in the Kremlin area were broken. During the construction of the Nautilus shopping mall on Nikolskaya Street, a three-level space with a total area of about seven to eight thousand square meters was dug underground. About 25 thousand cubic meters of soil were dredged to the surface.
According to Mikhailov, the foundations of all buildings bordering the Nautilus have been undermined. “Buildings cannot stand on a void. Moreover, the mine of the Kitay-Gorod metro station also falls into the same territory,”he noted with concern.
The situation turned out to be even more serious than experts expected. When examining buildings near the Kremlin, it turned out that many of them already have cracks in their foundations. The cathedral of the Zaikonospassky monastery was especially badly damaged. The 25-meter dome of the temple has deviated from its axis by five degrees and may collapse. “Back in May, there was a small crack in the asphalt on the territory of the monastery, and now it is a real failure, in which a person can easily hide,” said Father Dmitry.
The day before, a special commission worked on the territory of the monastery. The experts came to the conclusion that it is necessary to take emergency measures: to strengthen the cracked buildings and foundations.
