This belief has several names. The most common of these are "air worshipers" or "The Cult of Heavenly Gifts", when the natives of the Pacific Islands saw the American military who settled in the bases, namely, built houses for living, ate delicious canned food and used tools and clothing.
The Papuans considered them to be deities who came to save them, but after they began to watch the planes deliver food and other goods, they came to the conclusion that the white gods are taking the gifts of Heaven, which were intended specifically for them.
The tribes in their development long ago stopped at the level of the Stone Age, and therefore the quite ordinary affairs of the military, such as: patrolling the area, setting up radio communications, clearing landing strips, etc. for them acquired a simply mystical meaning. After all, it was after these manipulations that they saw flying birds that delivered "gifts from heaven".

The years of the War were over and the need for military bases fell away, all the soldiers were evacuated to their homeland, and the natives were left to their own devices. But with the departure of the military, the Papuans stopped getting canned food and other household items.
Then they thought that the spirits of their ancestors had left them again.
In order to return the "grace of the gods" and get cargo, people began to imitate exactly the actions of the military, sailors and pilots. Moreover, for them these actions have acquired a mystical and cultic meaning.

The funny and ironic thing is that neighboring states, in order to prevent the local tribes from starving to death, in a fit of ritual idleness, periodically drop humanitarian aid. thus, they unwittingly reinforce the belief in the Cargo Cult.
It would seem that the 20th century is a time of enlightenment, general globalization and the Internet, but due to the difference in technological level, a whole new religion was born. Now let's imagine that in the distant past there was the same contact between two peoples with different levels of development. It is not excluded that the same will happen and the backward tribe will imitate a highly developed civilization.
And, most likely, this is how strange and inexplicable artifacts appeared by modern scientists, such as the planes of the ancient Egyptians.
If we apply this approach, then a lot falls into place, but modern scientists will never take such a step. After all, then you will have to recognize the existence of other highly developed Civilizations of the distant past, and this will lead to a complete and total revision of the entire history.
