A group of Russian specialists from NUST MISIS and several other research centers have created a special antibacterial nanomaterial that can be used in dentistry to make fillings and pastes in order to prevent the development of oral diseases.

Scientists from NUST MISIS studied the properties of nanoparticles consisting of titanium, iron and zinc oxides. In the course of a series of experiments, it was found that these particles, even at very low concentrations, can kill bacteria, acting like antibiotics.

The addition of such nanoparticles to dental materials solves one of the main problems that all visitors to dental offices face - the loss of fillings and the appearance of caries at the point of contact with the tooth tissue. This is due to the fact that a micro gap forms over time at the border of the filling, in which microorganisms actively multiply. The addition of nanoparticles to the filling, which protect its edges from microbes, can solve this problem once and for all. According to one of the specialists involved in the project, Yakov Karasenkov,

“This development is, in fact, a technological revolution in dentistry. The antibacterial additive can be used not only in the composition of the filling, but also in other dental materials, extending the life of the implants. The drug has been successfully used in our clinic since September 2016."
