An underground Buddhist temple was discovered by Tajik archaeologists in the town of Fakhrobod, Khuroson district, Khatlon region. Saidmurod Bobomulloyev, director of the National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan, told Avesta about this.
“In Fahrabad we found an underground Buddhist temple measuring 6X5 meters. Also, four small rooms were found near the temple,”S. Bobomulloyev said.
According to him, presumably the Buddhist temple belongs to the 7-8 centuries AD. Such conclusions can be drawn from the architecture of the temple. But more precisely, the history of the temple will become known after studying the find,”the archaeologist emphasized.
“The interior of the temple is carved out of monolithic stone and has a domed appearance. At the top of the temple there is a depression in the form of a window, presumably for the penetration of light, Saidmurod Bobomulloyev shared what he saw.
According to the scientist, the teacher of the school №3 Fakhrabad Elyor Akhmedov informed the National Museum of Antiquities about the find.
“This is not the first Buddhist temple discovered on the territory of Tajikistan. Earlier, in the 80s and 90s of the last century, similar underground temples were discovered in Gissar, Shakhritus and Khovaling,”summed up S. Bobomulloev.
