The concentration of toxin-producing bacteria in Lake Baikal has reached the limit values. Now the water is dangerous. This is the opinion of Andrey Fedotov, director of the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
An increase in the concentration of toxic substances in the water leads to the fact that it does not meet sanitary standards. The algae Spirogyra grows almost throughout the shallow water, due to which the ecosystem of Lake Baikal is changing, the Baikal sponges, which previously served as a natural filter, disappear. This is the opinion of scientists. In a simple way, the lake is overgrown near the shores and the water “blooms” there. Numerous factors lead to the fact that the ecosystem, which has developed for millennia, is disrupted by humans overnight.

By the way, the growth of tourism and the number of tourist centers is already directly threatening the ecology of the lake. At the same water congress on June 25, the special representative of the President of the Russian Federation for environmental protection Sergey Ivanov announced the need to limit the flow of tourists to Lake Baikal.
The authorities acknowledge that the large influx of holidaymakers is becoming a major source of pollution. Piles of garbage accumulate on the shores of Lake Baikal, and local hotels, not equipped with treatment facilities, pour waste directly into the water.
The pulp and paper mill on Lake Baikal has been stopped, but its waste has not gone anywhere. Enterprises in the upper reaches of the rivers that feed the lake are working somewhere, but somewhere they are not. But the accumulated mountains of waste continue to drain into the rivers. And they will give. Tourism is developing, it seems, the most ecological type of economic activity. But he is not organized either. Now household waste is growing here as an avalanche, no less than in big cities. There is no infrastructure and experience, but there is an increase in the flow of tourists. The neighbor, China, needs vacation spots for its citizens too. Everything would be good: a tourist came, left a couple of yuan … bad, that also a couple of bottles, a couple of cans, a couple of buckets, I'm sorry, physiological waste. The flow of tourists to Lake Baikal is about 1.5 million people per year. This population is not a small town! And it grows from year to year. The coast is dividedactively built up. There is no wastewater treatment infrastructure; solid waste disposal is not well established.
