AI Project Management The US Department of Defense and the Allen Institute are planning to teach AI common sense. The project, dubbed Machine Common Sense, aims to teach machines an intuitive quality in which they make rational decisions that are close to human ones.
Machine Common Sense will launch a "competition" that asks AI algorithms to figure out several problems with answers that are not obvious to them. The main task of the project will be to teach AI simple and intuitive things for humans that are difficult for algorithms. In order to solve such problems, robots need to be given either the necessary experience or describe the problem in full.
DARPA decided to go the first way - they will use computational models that make mistakes and learn from their experience, trying to understand the logic of human psychology, in order to navigate in a variety of difficult situations.
The very first lessons will be rather primitive - the head of the program, Oren Etzioni, noted that the AI will be asked to predict the next human action, knowing the previous one. According to him, this question will be answered by "any student", but it is still difficult for robots. The transition to the next level of difficulty will take place in three months.
“Common sense is the dark matter of artificial intelligence,” said Oren Etzioni, CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a Seattle-based non-profit research organization that is exploring the possibilities of the technology. "I don't think it can be put into words, but the mechanical mind needs to be more flexible."
