The Soul, as a free Spirit, exists independently of the material body, just like the Life and Consciousness embodied in it. Before uniting with the body, the Soul is one of the intelligent beings that make up the heavenly world and clothe itself for a while in a bodily shell for the fulfillment of a karmic task and further development.
The Vedas speak of many worlds and many Universes in which there is an infinite number of Souls - living beings, each of which is a quantum of consciousness. Based on this, the number of embodied Souls on each planet is limited only by the resources of this planet.
Each Soul temporarily dwells in a transitory body, the biological type of which corresponds to the level of development of its consciousness.
The only source of consciousness is the Soul itself, but the filling of this consciousness is conditioned by the interaction of the Soul with the body in which it lives. The material body (without details) consists of two parts - gross and subtle. The subtle body, in turn, consists of the mind, intelligence, false * I * (i.e., due to false identification with the material body). The gross body is formed by five gross elements - earth (solids), liquids, gases, heat (fire), as well as air and ether.
The interaction of an individual Soul with a gross and subtle body gives rise to unthinkably complex reactions that cannot be explained only by chemical and physical processes in the cell. That is precisely why physics and chemistry are unable to explain why there is such a difference between a living and a dead body … Living things grow and develop. The dead rots and decomposes.

In simple terms, the life in the body is supported by the Soul, when a living being leaves the body, it becomes just inanimate matter, although all the chemical elements necessary for the functioning of the body do not disappear anywhere. The biological existence of a body, without consciousness, that is, without a Soul, is another story.
