The ancient Greek scientist Herodotus, speaking in his "History" about a visit to Ancient Egypt, mentioned a "baris" boat, which was distinguished by a special design. Archaeologists investigating the flooded port city of Tonis-Heracleion discovered a ship resembling in structure the cargo ship described by the historian, which confirms his words.
Herodotus in a work published in 450 BC. e., spoke about a boat, folded like brickwork with sailing equipment. The main feature of the Nile vessel was the steering through the keel hole. A unique ship, the existence of which scientists studying the works of the ancient Greek historian doubted for a long time, was found among 70 different boats.
The sunken ship, about 2500 years old, is well preserved. Experts, studying the ship, noticed in it several nuances that distinguish its design from the structure of the "baris". The boat described by Herodotus had shorter spikes for fastening the side boards, and there were no reinforcing frames, but the discovered ship had them. However, the main features mentioned were fully confirmed. It is possible that these ships were built at the same shipyard.
