"Black Ghost" is the name of a sculpture installed on the site where the Klaipeda castle once stood. She appeared here not for entertainment, but as a tribute to the memory of centuries past.
According to legend, on February 19, 1595, the guard Hans von der Heid, who was guarding the Memel castle, saw a man dressed in a long black robe. Approaching the guard, the stranger inquired about the amount of provisions in the castle, and when he heard that the inhabitants of Memel had everything in order with food, he got angry and disappeared with the words: "But you still don't have enough grain and firewood." Together with him, the bridge over the canal evaporated, along which the ghost came …
They did not believe the words of the guard, but soon the country had a really hard time. No one expected this, and therefore a strange story that forever engraved in the hearts of people began to be passed down from generation to generation.
The second appearance of the ghost took place in June 2010 in the presence of numerous residents and guests of the city. A bronze sculpture weighing 300 kg was erected at a drawbridge, standing on the way to the ruins of an ancient castle.
She personifies a lonely ghost who, illuminating his path with a lantern, gets out of the dark river to look at the current state of the city … At some point he freezes and silently looks at the new world, which is so unlike his memories.
