Archaeologists have discovered an ancient mass grave in Bolivia, the age of skeletons in which reaches 500 years.

The remains of more than a hundred representatives of the indigenous peoples of South America were found 20 kilometers from La Paz (the capital of Bolivia), near the city of Viacha. Some skulls were elongated, indicating that their owners were in a privileged position. In addition, experts have unearthed more than 30 clay vessels that were used by the Incas in ritual ceremonies.

The cemetery itself was originally built by the Pakahes people, which was part of one of the kingdoms of the Aymara people. Pacajes appeared around 1200 AD, after the decline of Tiwanaku, the Andean civilization, which flourished between 700-900 AD. Like many other civilizations of Mesoamerica and South America, the state of Tiwanaku disappeared due to the aridization of the climate. The fact that its capital was taken by the Aymara tribes also played a role. At the end of the 15th century, the territories of Pakajes and Aimar were conquered by the Incas.

In addition to earthenware vessels, more than 150 bronze jewelry was unearthed, including necklaces, bracelets, headbands and brooches. According to the researchers, although the burial site was plundered in the past, the discovery provides insight into the social hierarchy of the ancient people. At the moment, the remains have been taken to the archaeological center for further study, after which they will be stored in the Viachi Museum.
