The bottom of the Dnieper hides a strange building in the place where the island used to be …

Amazing nearby! You don't have to travel to Egypt or fly to Australia to plunge into the world of mystery. Zaporozhye diving instructor Yuri Bataev has been studying the depths of the Dnieper for many years and has repeatedly made quite interesting finds here that help restore the history of these places. However, this time, after the last dive, a real sensation broke out: at the bottom were found the ruins of a mysterious flooded building, which went under water almost a hundred years ago - after the construction of the Dnieproges dam. It is not marked on the map and, in theory, should not be here … But it is!

“There used to be Kukharev Island in this place, we became interested in it for a long time, we began to study the archival data,” says Yuri Bataev. - The instruments showed that there is something like a building in that place. Judging by the echo sounder data, it is impressive in size. But no documents about the building have yet been found in any archive.

Divers sank to the bottom to find a flooded structure. At a depth of about 15 meters, they actually found a structure. Exploring the surviving walls, we came across a meter-by-meter window, somewhere two or three meters from it - another one. it is clear that there are 10 such windows in total, which means that the length of the building is about 30-40 meters. It is about 10 meters wide and about 3 meters high.

- The building is clearly pre-revolutionary, good quality, - says Yuri Bataev. - It is made of rubble stone, with walls about a meter thick. At the same time, there are no partitions inside that would divide the building into rooms, corridors. Outside, the windows are lined with red brick. This means that this is not a simple building, but some kind of important structure. A simple shed or warehouse would not be decorated like that.

There are several options for what this structure could be. Since the building was located not far from the shipping channel, it could have been some kind of staging post. On the other hand, the building could also be used for defensive purposes - the windows, which narrowed into the building and expanded towards the outside of the wall, are very much like loopholes.

But what is curious: nowhere on the old pre-revolutionary maps and in the surviving descriptions is the presence of any defensive outpost or point in this place noted. What kind of secret building, who, when and why it erected here - is still a big mystery …
