British and American geophysicists have proven that by the middle of the 21st century, the planet will experience a collapse of electrical systems. The corresponding study was published in Scientific Reports, briefly reported by the University of Reading (UK).
According to experts, most likely in 2050 there will be a minimum solar activity. This phenomenon, as the authors note, is similar to the Maunder minimum - a period of long-term decrease in solar activity, primarily in the number of spots on the star.
The decrease in activity will lead, as scientists believe, to a reduction by about a third of the volume of the heliosphere - the area around the star, where the star's magnetic field dominates. This will lead to penetration deep into the solar system of high-energy charged particles, which, possibly, provoke the collapse of the planet's energy systems.
A decrease in the activity of the star can also lead to the fact that auroras will be observed only at extremely high latitudes, which is associated with the assumed weakening of the solar wind. In particular, auroras will not be visible from the UK.
Scientists came to their conclusions by conducting magnetohydrodynamic modeling of the solar atmosphere. The authors' construction is based on the available data on sunspots collected over the past 30 years, as well as the general statistics of the activity of the star over the past four centuries.
