Representatives of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are trying to find out the cause of the mysterious deaths of American dentists and other dental workers. In Virginia alone, nine dentists have died in recent years, according to the latest report from experts, each of whom died of a progressive pulmonary disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
This ailment is very rare and is characterized by scarring and compaction of the lung tissue, due to which less oxygen enters the patient's blood. According to statistics, less than a third of patients live 5 years after establishing such a diagnosis. So far, experts are unable to determine the cause of these mysterious deaths. Naturally, it has been suggested that dentists are exposed to some harmful substances at work. For example, mercury, which is part of some filling materials. Nevertheless, according to official documents, all American dentists who work legally are as safe as possible from this risk.
Dr. Randall Nett of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says:
All patients who died were male. Dentists and their assistants have likely been exposed to bacteria, viruses, dust, gases, radiation, or other forms of danger. At the moment, we do not know exactly what caused the outbreak of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, but a thorough investigation is underway to find out the reasons for this. For the time being, we recommend that dentists use special respirators to reduce the risk of disease.
At the same time, the opinions of doctors on the Internet on this matter are almost unanimous that the dentist profession is the safest of all other medical professions. Therefore, in the death of American workers in dental clinics, in fact, one can trace either some mystical fate, or some latent threat that simply needs to be identified and eliminated.
