Siesta is sacred
In the first few days after birth, the baby spends almost all the time asleep. The older the child gets, the less he sleeps during the day. The so-called polyphasic (reusable) nature of a newborn's sleep is replaced by a monophasic (one-time) sleep of an adult. The disposable nature of sleep is not a biological law, but rather is a consequence of cultural traditions.
For example, in northern and central Europe and North America, people usually work during the day and it is not customary to sleep there after lunch. While in the Mediterranean countries, in Central and South America, there is a custom - siesta, which allows residents to sleep in the hottest period of the day. After this rest, they return to work in the cooler evening and night hours.
The Greek sleep researcher Konstantin Soldatos recently conducted a study in which 42% of those surveyed said they practice siesta at least three times a week. Soldatos came to the conclusion that the previously widespread custom of daytime rest in Greece was disappearing. For a couple of decades, siesta has been a sacred thing for all Greeks, without exception, now more and more people do without an afternoon nap.
It is curious that in China and today the custom of siesta (the so-called Sioux-si) is widespread. During the lunch break, workers and employees, having eaten, usually rest lying down.
Elderly people generally tend to want to sleep during the day, regardless of which part of the world they live in. Old people often "nod off" during the day and wake up at night - this polyphasic sleep is somewhat reminiscent of the sleep of babies. Older people have difficulty falling asleep - they toss and turn in bed for a long time, unable to fall asleep, and wake up too early. But they get up easily and feel rested.
"Larks" and "owls"

“Whoever gets up early, God gives him,” says the proverb. Going to bed early and getting up early to get to work in the morning has always been considered a sign of a healthy lifestyle. German professor Theodor Steckmann at the beginning of the last century instilled in his wards the so-called rule of healthy sleep. He believed that sleep before midnight had twice the restorative power than that which arose after this magical hour. And he argued that you can be content with only 4-5 hours of sleep a night if you go to bed at 7 pm.
A follower of Steckmann, the Belgian naturopathic physician Georg Thienes writes: “Morning is the best and most convenient time for work. Because we feel kind of renewed, flexible and energetic. We seem to be getting younger in the morning. " But perhaps you belong to the very category of people who are not at all eager to get up early. About someone who gets out of bed with difficulty in the morning and tries to suppress his bad mood, they often say that "he got up on the wrong foot." After waking up, such people remain half asleep for a long time, they are lethargic, they have no appetite. They feel uncomfortable all morning, talking to others in an irritated tone. At about noon, their mood begins to gradually improve, they feel a surge of strength and vivacity. The peak of working capacity in people of this type is in the evening, and vigor and activity remains late.
Sleep experts call this type of people "evening", but in everyday life we call them "owls". It differs sharply from the pronounced "morning" type, that is, "larks". Lark people wake up on their own, get up without difficulty and without gloom on their face, feel rested and refreshed, their ability to work is maximum in the morning hours. By the evening, their energy reserve dries up, fatigue increases, and if circumstances allow, they go to bed early.
