The study participants were divided into 4 groups. The first group, before memorizing a list of 72 words, quickly clenched their right fist for 90 seconds and then did the same before remembering the list of words.

The second group clenched their left hand into a fist before memorizing the words and remembering. The third group clenched their fists alternately before memorizing and trying to remember. The fourth group was control and did not clench their fists at all.

The group that clenched the right hand while remembering the list and then the left hand when remembering did better than the other groups. This group also performed better than the group that did not clench their hands at all, although this difference was not statistically significant.
